Times-Herald wins awards in Arkansas Press Contest

The news staff of the Times-Herald  received several awards in the Arkansas Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, it was announced over the weekend.

Alan Smith won a first place award in the Single News Photograph category, for “Nothing Left,” which appeared in the April 15 edition. The picture shows a set of steps, which are all that was left of a trailer in which a woman died during a storm.

Sports Editor Fred Conley won second place in the Single Sports Action Photography category for his photo, “Struggle,” which shows two linemen going at it during a high school football scrimmage. Conley also took third in the Best Sports Page category.

David Nichol took third in the Humorous Column category, for “Why do they want us back?” 

Smith also took three honorable mentions. One was in the News Story category, for Bus Driver Leaves Students. Another was in the Feature Story category, for “Vauters shares stories of life, and he also won honorable mention in the Picture Page/Photo Essay category for “Celebrating Fall Fest.”

Kendall Owens received an honorable mention in the Single News Photograph category, for  “Destroyed,” which shows Forrest City firefighters in action.
