Calvary Christian High School graduate Davey Burrows was recently honored by the United States Army Reserve as the 2001 Scholar Athlete for academic and athletic excellence.

He has also been awarded the Distinguished Athlete Award by the United States Marines.

Burrows, the son of David and Peggy Burrows of Forrest City, averaged about 14 points per game, 10 rebounds and 10 assists this past season as the starting point guard for the Calvary Eagles senior high boys' basketball team.

He was named the team's most valuable player and was named to the MACS All-Conference and All-Tournament teams. Burrows was also named to the All-Tournament team at the Earle Invitational Tournament this past basketball season, where the Eagles finished second.

Burrows is hoping to attend either East Arkansas Community College or Williams Baptist College in the fall.

He graduated from Calvary as a high honor student with a grade point of almost 3.8.

Burrows has three sisters, Jodi, who attends Palestine-Wheatley; Jill Burrows from Atlanta, Ga., and Jackie Wallace, who lives in Marked Tree.

Get those nominations in today

In case you still haven't submitted a nomination for the Forrest City Athletic Hall of Fame's "Second Class," today is the deadline to do so.

The Athletic Hall of Fame was started last year and 12 Forrest City athletes -- from three different eras, Lincoln High School and Forrest City High School before 1970 and after 1970 -- were inducted.

Twelve new names will be added this year at the Sept. 21 banquet and induction ceremonies.

This year's class will be honored during halftime of the Forrest City-Jonesboro football game at Sam Smith Stadium. Plaques for each new member will be placed on the Wall of Honor inside Mustang Arena.

The selection committee will make their choices for the second class based on the nominees (living or deceased) and the information provided by the person or persons making the nomination. Nomination forms may be picked up at the St. Francis County Museum located at 603 Front Street or from Bill Baxter by calling 633-0780.
