Blue Devils slay Dragons for sixth straight victory

DEWITT -- The Hughes Blue Devils may be on to something.

For the second straight game, the Blue Devils scored 83 points.

For the second straight game, the Blue Devils held their opponent to less than 50 points.

The end result leaves Hughes with a six-game winning streak overall, an 8-3 season mark and unbeaten through two 6AAA conference games.

At DeWitt Tuesday, the Blue Devils pounded the Dragons by 48 points, winning 83-35. Last Friday, against Brinkley, the Blue Devils won by 38 points, 83-45.

The Blue Devils used a balanced scoring attack to off-set a 23-point performance by DeWitt's Julius Johnson.

Marcus Lay led Hughes with 12 points, while Robert Davis, Jermaine Davis and Ayo Ogunsakin each had 10 points.

The Blue Devils will continue league play Friday when they host Dumas.

Lonoke 59, Cabot 46

Skippy Norman scored 14 points and Jeremy McClain added 13 as the Class AAA Lonoke Jackrabbits, 4-5 overall for the year, got past the Class AAAAA Cabot Panthers 59-46 Tuesday.

Josh Nobles scored 16 and Tommy Williams helped out with 15 points for Cabot.

Lonoke will play at England Friday night.

McCrory 74, Cross County 53

Ronnie Massanelli Jr. scored a game-high 27 points to lead McCrory past Cross County 74-53 Tuesday night.

Massanelli, who also handed out nine assists, hit 21 of his total in the first half. Terry Kittrell scored 18 points and grabbed 15 rebounds and Collin Moore scored 12.

Wynne 52, Stuttgart 40

Wynne's Wade Boeckman scored 14 points to lead a balanced scoring effort in the Yellowjackets' 52-40 victory over Stuttgart Tuesday.

John Jones added 13 and Larry Boyd 12 for Wynne. Teddrick Walls scored 15 points to lead the Ricebirds.

Wynne will play Forrest City Friday at Mustang Arena.

Forrest City did not play Tuesday night.

Benton 65, Sylvan Hills 60

The Benton Panthers used a 21-to-7 fourth period to put away the Sylvan Hills Bears 65-60 Tuesday night in nonconference action.

Brandon Polk led Benton with 30 points, while Torey Shelnut added 15 points and Jonathan Bechtel helped out with 11 points.

Jeremy Brown scored 25 points to lead the Bears and Damon Harris added 15.

Sylvan Hills will play at Malvern on Friday.

North Pulaski 58, Jacksonville 50

Three North Pulaski players scored at least 10 points as the Falcons held off inner-city rival Jacksonville 58-50 in the Devils' Den.

Lindwood Sanders led Falcons, 6-1 overall, with 13 points while Robert Cage finished with 12 points and Cortney Turner added 10.

It was North Pulaski's second victory over the Red Devils (2-4) this season.

The Falcons defeated Jacksonville 62-47 in the season opener.


Lady Blue Devils fall to DeWitt

DEWITT -- The Hughes Lady Blue Devils slipped to 1-5 for the season Tuesday, losing a 6AAA Conference matchup against DeWitt's Lady Dragons, 44-32.

Valreneeka Brown led the Hughes scoring effort with nine points.

Hughes won their first game of the year last Friday against Brinkley.

Lisa Black scored 19 points to lead Dewitt, which improves to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in the 6AAA Conference.

The Lady Blue Devils will host Dumas Friday night.

Hazen 51, Augusta 49

Amber Owens hit two free throws late in the contest to give the Hazen Lady Hornets a victory over the Augusta Lady Red Devils Tuesday night.

Tara Jones scored 15 points to lead Hazen, 5-3 overall for the year. Cara Petrus added 10 points.

Lonoke 48, Cabot 39

Tommie Reddick scored 22 points to aid in Lonoke's 48-39 win over Class AAAAA Cabot Tuesday night.

The Lady Rabbits improve to 6-4 for the year.

Brittany Goings led Cabot (7-3) with 14 points.

Sylvan Hills 49, Benton 47

Leslie Larsen's three-point shot from almost midcourt bounced off the backboard and rim as the Lady Bears held off the Lady Panthers (2-6) in nonconference action.

April Harris and Danielle Byrdsong led Sylvan Hills with nine points each while Sharlee Crowson poured in 12 points for Benton.

Jacksonville 50, North Pulaski 41

Jacksonville's Lady Devils improved to 6-1 for the year by defeating North Pulaski's Lady Falcons 50-41 Tuesday night.

The Lady Red Devils, who beat North Pulaski by 25 points in the season opener, led 29-20 at halftime and by as many as 11 points.

Jacksonville was led by Rachel Townsend with 16 points. Chiquita Brooks led the Lady Falcons with 16.

Junior Girls

Hughes 43, DeWitt 10

The Hughes Junior Lady Blue Devils won their third straight game Tuesday to improve to 4-2 for the year with a 43-10 win over the DeWitt Junior Lady Dragons at DeWitt.

The victory keeps Hughes perfect in league play at 2-0.

Marley Lemons led Hughes with 11 points while eighth-grader Yakita Johnson came off the bench to add 10 points.


FC junior high teams set for Thursday games

The Forrest City White Junior Mustang teams will host West Memphis East Thursday night at Mustang Arena.

The White Junior Mustangs, coached by Sonny Shields, are still in search of their first season win.

The White Junior Lady Mustangs are 6-3 for the year.

Meanwhile, the Forrest City Blue Junior High Mustangs and Lady Mustangs will be on the road playing at West memphis West Thursday.
