DEWITT -- It came down to the final shot twice for the Hughes Blue Devils at the DeWitt Invitational Tournament over the weekend.

On Friday, against Holly Grove in the semifinals, the Blue Devils survived a last-second shot to clip the Panthers 54-53 to advance to Saturday's championship game.

Hughes, 5-3 for the year, led the entire game.

On Saturday, against White Hall, the Blue Devils trailed the entire game and needed a buzzer shot by Robert Davis to take a 50-49 win and the tournament championship.

Davis scored 47 points in the two games -- getting 18 against Holly Grove and 29 against White Hall.

"R.D. is stepping up his game to a level that, right now is unbelievable," said Hughes Coach Brad Brannen. "He is playing his heart out."

Against Holly Grove, the Blue Devils were nursing their one-point lead with three seconds to play when a jump ball was called by the officials giving possession to Holly Grove under their own basket.

A last-second shot off the inbounds play was off the mark.

Hughes led 18-14 after one period and 29-28 at the half. The Blue Devils pushed their lead to 46-36 by outscoring Holly Grove 17-to-8 in the third period but watched their lead dwindle when the Panthers reversed the tables and outscored Hughes 17-to-8 in the final period.

Antonio Cotton added nine points in the game while Chris Crawford helped out with eight points.

Saturday, against White Hall, Hughes trailed 49-46 with 33 seconds left in the game when Johnny Washington scored on a layup to cut White Hall's lead to 49-48 with seven seconds showing.

White Hall missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw situation and Davis, after the inbounds play, drove the length of the floor to bank in a running jumper at the buzzer for the one-point win.

Jay Doolittle had nine points for Hughes.

White Hall led 14-11 after one period and 29-22 at the half.

Hughes will host Forrest City Tuesday night at Blue Devil Gym.

CABOT -- The Forrest City Lady Mustangs fell to 0-4 for the season on Saturday, losing to Mount St. Mary's 58-29 at the Panther Invitational in Cabot.

"We're 0-4 but we've played the right teams," said Coach Sue Jayroe. "If we're going to improve this program, we have to play up to another level of opponents and that's what we're trying to do. We're 0-4 but I think we made some progress in the three games at Cabot. The kids played hard and worked hard."

Deosha Agnew led Forrest City with 13 points, the only Lady Mustang to finish in double figures.

The Lady Mustangs will travel to Hughes Tuesday night to take on the Lady Blue Devils at 6 p.m.

After Tuesday's game at Hughes, the Lady Mustangs do not play again until Friday, Dec. 14, when they host Wynne.
