JUNCTION CITY--Fordyce was better than Huttig, but not enough to derail the Palestine-Wheatley Lady Patriots Thursday night at the Dual State Tournament being played at Junction City.

The win sets up a semifinal game Saturday morning against either Emerson or Union.

The No. 1 seeded Lady Patriots flexed their scoring muscles early, hitting several three's to roll to a 20-2 lead after one period.

Junior point guard Nikki Bass finished with 18 points and drained three, three-pointers.

Erica Smith finished with 25 points, 11 of that total in the first period, while Libby Martin added eight points off the bench. Melanie Baker finished with five points and eight rebounds while Carlene Gardner and Markita Tomlin had four points each.

The Lady Patriots improved to 20-1 while Fordyce falls to 13-6.

P-W increased its lead to 40-8 late in the second quarter as Bass scored 12 points in the half.

Fordyce trailed 42-10 at the half, but hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the third.

Bass answered with a three-pointer of her own, triggering a string of 20 unanswered points as the Lady Patriots built a 63-16 lead with 5:56 left in the game.

Cacye Smith led Fordyce with nine points.

"Fordyce was a little better than Huttig (a team P-W defeated 68-26 Wednesday), but we played probably the best game of the season Thursday," said P-W Coach Beverly Bass. "We came out hot and kept our momentum high the entire game."

P-W is ranked No. 1 in the state's Class AA rankings and third overall in the state.

The Lady Patriots have outscored its opponents 83-14 in the first half of their first two tournament games.

"We didn't know anything about anybody in this tournament," said Bass, whose team has arrived in time to play and leaves right after the game. "I haven't watched any of the other teams play. We just take it one day at a time. It seems like we do better when they don't know anything about who they're playing and they just go out and play. I might call a coach but I try not to let them know too much. We've never played in this area before and we are enjoying ourselves. This is a good tournament for us."
