Pine Bluff, White Hall to play for district title

Forrest City All-Stars eliminated, finish 1-2

The 13-year-old Forrest City All-Stars picked up a win at the District 7 Babe Ruth Tournament on Saturday before being eliminated.

Forrest City fell to Pine Bluff 19-1 last Thursday in the tournament opener and regrouped to take a 14-4 win over West Helena Twin City Saturday morning, eliminating West Helena.

Saturday afternoon, Forrest City fell victim to Marion, who rallied for a 16-15 win, ending the team's All-Star run.

Pine Bluff, which has stayed in the winner's bracket and is undefeated, will meet White Hall today in the championship game set for 6 p.m. at the Sports Complex.

In the event of a White Hall victory in the first game, the second or "if" game will be played at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Pine Bluff put White Hall into the loser's bracket Saturday with a 14-9 win in the winner's semifinal game.

White Hall defeated Wynne on Sunday 18-3, to get back to the championship game.

In three games, Pine Bluff has outscored its opponents at the district tournament 52-to-15.

The Forrest City All-Stars were coached by Darry Banks Sr. and Dexter Freeman.

Forrest City did not field a 14-year-old All-Star team.

Forrest City 15's ousted from tourney

MARION--The Forrest City 15-year-old All-Stars failed to pick up a win at the District 7 Babe Ruth Tournament being played at Marion.

Forrest City dropped their first-round game on Thursday to West Helena 7-4 and were eliminated by Pine Bluff Friday night, losing 14-0.

Marion, the host team, stayed unbeaten throughout the weekend and reached today's championship game.

Marion defeated Wynne, West Memphis and White Hall to get to the finals.

The overall champion will advance to the state tournament which will be played at Crossett, July 20-25.


Sanyo completes undefeated run in 10-under girls' league

Sanyo scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning Friday night and then held Title Company scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to secure an 11-5 win in girls' 10-under slow pitch softball.

The victory gave Sanyo its 18th consecutive win and helped the team complete their undefeated season run through the league.

Both teams were locked in a 2-2 tie after one inning before Sanyo took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the third inning.

Title Company picked up a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 4-4 but Sanyo broke the tie with two runs in the top of the fifth for a 6-4 lead.

Title cut that lead to 6-5 with a single run in the bottom of the fifth.

Alondra Pritchard scored three runs for Sanyo while Erin Marlowe added two runs.

Sanyo's win over Title Company also helped give Dr. Schwartz a second-place finish in the league standings. Title Company finished third in the final standings.

Schwartz defeated True Value 11-4 in their final game Friday night.

Schwartz got three runs from Savannah Ferguson in their win over True Value while Mishanna Morgan, Jasmine Rucker and Andrea Hall scored two runs each.

Forrest City Bank took an 11-8 season-ending win over Steven's Friday which helped give the team fourth place.

Ashley Blaylock and Jordan Pentecost scored three runs each for Forrest City Bank while Robin Steward added two runs.

Forrest City Bank fell behind 5-2 after one inning and rallied with five runs in the second inning, a single run in the third and three runs in the fourth for the win.

Taylor Billingsley, Caitlin Peterson and Kayla Johnson each scored two runs for Steven's, which finishes the year at 6-12.

Food Giant held on to finish fifth in the league standings with an 11-7 win over Southern Furniture.

Food Giant got two runs each from Kim Shafer and Megan White while LaShunda Curtis scored two runs for Southern Furniture. Shamara Hall, Chantrice Mason, Brittney Hankins and Randi Laws added single runs for Southern.

Walker Insurance ended the year by being awarded a forfeit win over Mom's on Friday.

The win gave Walker a seventh-place finish.

Hooten's says Mustangs will finish sixth in AAAAA-East

The Forrest City Mustangs have been picked to finish sixth in the AAAAA-East football conference this season by Hooten's Arkansas Football magazine.

The 440-page magazine, an annual preview of the state's high school and college football teams, is now on sale.

Cabot, the defending Class AAAAA champions, have been picked to repeat again this year.

Hooten's selected Alma as the team to beat in Class AAAA, Nashville in Class AAA and Shiloh Christian in Class AA.

Hooten's also features complete fall schedules for all Arkansas high school teams and college teams nation wide.

Hooten's picked the Hughes Blue Devils to finish fifth in the 6AAA Conference and tabbed the palestine-Wheatley Patriots as the third-best team in the 3AA Conference.

All three schools open the 2001 season on Aug. 31, when Forrest City hosts Osceola, Palestine-Wheatley hosts Altheimer and Hughes travels to Barton.

In college football, Hooten's has the Arkansas Razorbacks picked to finish fifth in the SEC West and has them ranked 39th nationally to begin the year.
