M&T Paving, Lion's Club pick up wins

After going almost two weeks between games, M&T Paving and Lion's Club finally got back on the baseball diamond Tuesday night in Minor League play at the Sports Complex.

Before Tuesday, M&T last played on May 24 and Lion's Club last saw action on May 25.

Both teams were winners Tuesday with M&T defeating Mr. T Auto 12-7 to improve to 5-0 for the year, three games behind Taylor-Casbeer, also undefeated at 8-0.

Lion's Club improved to 4-1 for the year with an 11-10 win over Easley Law Firm.

M&T opened a quick 8-2 lead over Mr. T Auto after two innings. Mr. T. scored four times in the top of the sixth.

Will Trail and Xavier Clardy scored two runs each to lead M&T while Scott Gracey, Rothulles Steverson, Cory Deere, Leslie Parker, Ben Dickey, Corey Robichaud, Nathan Derrick and Austin Reniger scored single runs.

Devin Green scored twice for Mr. T while Austin Kennedy, Ben Hollowell, James Allen Aldridge, Davyon McKinney and Ryan Hawkins added single runs.

Trailing 10-7, Lion's Club scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning and then held Easley scoreless in the bottom of the inning to notch their 11-10 victory.

Ladarius Hartway and Jacob Tittle led Lion's Club by scoring three runs each. Hartway added a first inning solo home run while Deangelo Lockett hit a sixth inning home run.

John Gilbreath led Easley by scoring three times while James Pendergrass and Jerod Brown added two runs each. Brown homered in ther first inning.


POPS shuts down Rotary Club 10-0

POPS and Rotary Club met for the second time this season Tuesday in Bambino (11-12) League and the result was the same as the first meeting -- a victory for POPS.

POPS scored 10 runs in the fourth inning to shut out Rotary Club 10-0. POPS won the first meeting 11-8 back on May 8.

It was the first shut out of the year for Rotary (5-3).

Randy Miller went the distance for POPS, holding Rotary to just four hits while James Green and Charles Cooley scored twice.

Taylor Clark pitched the complete game for Rotary and took the loss.

In other Bambino games Tuesday, Vaccaro Lumber improved to 4-4 for the year with a 12-8 win over Hess Shoes. Will Malone led Vaccaro by scoring three runs while Kyle Emerson and Brian Guyton added two runs each.

Kenny Grady and Torre Hunter scored twice each for Hess while Michael King, Alan Triggs and Josh Hinkle added single runs.

League leading Cochran Auto, 7-1, edged Bonanza 4-3 when Blake Davis singled and scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Bonanza scored a single run in the top half of the inning to tie the game at 3-3 when Larry Bean singled and scored.

Taco Bell got three runs each from Justin Gadberry, Parker Whittenton and Andre Stephens Tuesday in a 15-7 win over Taylor Glass.

Donnie Willis, Josh Lopez, Joe DeWitt, A.J. Moody, Brandon Barnett and Tyler Davenport each scored runs for Taylor Glass with Willis and DeWitt hitting home runs.


Steven's shuts down Mom's to win third straight game

Steven's won its third consecutive game Tuesday night and moved into a fifth-place tie in the girls' 10-under slow pitch softball league, with a 3-0 win over Mom's.

The win helped Steven's surpass their win total from a year ago, when the team finished the year with just two victories.

Kayla Johnson, Mary Hodges and Kaitin Peterson scored single runs for Stevens.

In other games Tuesday, Sanyo stayed unbeaten with an 8-3 win over True Value; Dr. Schwartz defeated Food Giant 11-8; Walker Insurance got past Southern Furniture 10-7 and Forrest City Bank put down Title Company 11-9.

Sanyo stays in first at 9-0 while Title Company remains in second place, despite Tuesday's loss and Food Giant and Dr. Schwartz are tied for third place.

Results from Tuesday's 12 and 16-under league play will be printed in Thursday's edition.


EACC sponsors youth soccer camp next week

East Arkansas Community College will once again sponsor a youth soccer camp, June 11-15, for ages five through 13.

Instructors from the Germantown (Tenn.) Soccer Club will conduct the camp which will be divided into two age groups.

Youths, ages 5-8, will attend from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. each day while youths, ages 9-13, will attend from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. each day.

Cost of the camp is $60 per child.

The instructors will focus on teaching the basic skills of the game and will hold daily scrimmages.

Former players needed for Old Timers basketball tournament

Palestine-Wheatley is looking for former basketball players, both male and female from the area, to participate in an upcoming "Old Timers Tournament" set for June 21-23 and June 28-30.

Any former area basketball players interested in being a part of this tournament, can contact Terry Clardy or Beverly Bass at PWHS, (870) 581-2425 or (870) 581-2921.

Each team will be comprised of seven players.


FC driver wins first feature race

Bryce Vowan, 21, of Forrest City, won the feature event in the Sprint Car division at Riverside Speedway in West Memphis recently. Vowan won the second of three qualifying heats, beating former track champion A.G. Raines Jr. In the 24-car feature, Vowan passed 2000 track champion Eddie Gallagher of Memphis on lap one and was in the lead on the last lap when the race was stopped after a crash in turn two. Vowan took the restart lead to win his first career feature event.

Vowan is a five-time track champion in racing go-karts and recently completed his fourth season in the Sprint Car division and finished in the top five consistently. He placed third in points for 2000 at Riverside Speedway and was awarded the Most Improved Driver Award in the sprints.

He is sponsored by McDonald's of Forrest City, Johnny's Pro-Auto Body of Wynne, Midsouthracing.com, Dynotech Racing Engines and Bullett Racing Cams of Memphis.

Vowan is the son of Mike and Teresa Campbell of Forrest City and Bill Vowan of Memphis. He is the grandson of Carl "Buddy" Vowan Sr., of Marianna and Jim and Eve McCullar of Forrest City.
