Forrest City Legion teams begin long home stand next week

It hasn't been the best start for the Forrest City American Legion AAA and A teams, but at least they're coming home for a while.

Forrest City played their first six dates of the 2001 season on the road.

They have one more road game -- a trip to Blytheville Monday -- before playing seven of their next eight game at the Sports Complex.

The home stand begins on Tuesday, when Paragould comes calling for an A-AAA doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

Jonesboro comes to town next Wednesday for an A doubleheader and Searcy visits the Sports Complex on Friday (June 15) for an A doubleheader.

The AAA squad is 0-5 with losses to Mt. Home, Jonesboro, Batesville and Searcy.

The A team is fresh off a 10-9 win over Batesville's Citizen's Bank on Sunday in which Marcus Hancock and Dustin Gore combined for the pitching victory.

Forrest City was helped by a new rule this year in American Legion baseball.

In the bottom of the seventh, with two runners on, one out and Forrest City leading 10-6, Batesville's Robbee Brown singled to right field to drive in Andy Lovell, making it 10-7.

But home plate umpire Jeff Everetts called Brown out for using an illegal bat, and it cost Citizens Bank an out. The umpire led the play stand.

Batesville took a 6-5 lead in a five-run sixth inning, but Forrest City answered with five of their own in the top of the seventh. The teams combined for nine errors -- Forrest City with five -- and Batesville committed three in the sixth.

It was Forrest City's first victory of the year against two losses.

In the AAA game against Batesville, Post 114 overcame mental mistakes and the absence of three starters to beat Forrest City 12-4.

Hancock and Colby McKennon combined for the Forrest City pitching duties.

The A squad was originally scheduled to play in the Sheridan tournament, starting today, but had to withdraw, since Forrest City school is still in session.

Jason Long, a former Forrest City Mustang and American Legion player, is coaching both Legion squads this year.

Long said it will be good to come home for a few games.

The AAA squad is coming off a 1-24 season from a year ago while the A squad won just two games.
