The Hughes Blue Devils finished fourth in the final Associated Press High School basketball poll released Monday afternoon. Hughes is the 2001 Class AA state champions after defeating Clarksville Friday in Pine Bluff. The Palestine-Wheatley Lady Patriots finished the season as the No. 3 ranked girls' team in the final Associated Press High School poll after winning the Class AA state championship Saturday by defeating Riverside. It was the first-ever state championship for each school.
The Forrest City Mustang and Lady Mustang golf teams picked up victories over Marion in matches played Monday at Forrest City Country Club.
The Forrest City boys edged Marion 177-178, led by Josh Coleman's round of 42. Brian Hacker fired a 43 while Chad Halbert finished with a 44 for the round. Luke DeBuhr finished with a 48.
Marion's Blake Henry took medalist honors with a 36.
In junior varsity action, Kellen Carroll fired a 50.
In girls play, Sarah Eldridge fired a 45 to walk away with medalist honors and the Forrest City girls sent Marion packing with a low score of 93. Marion finished with a 126 total.
Krista Coleman finished with a 48. In JV girls play, Paige Poteat shot a 65, Melissa Fogg a 67 and Hannah Cohn a 68.
In the season opener last week, Searcy defeated the Forrest City boys 169-204 while the Forrest City girls got a 47 from Eldridge in their match.
Jake Wade led the boys with a 47.
The Forrest City Lady Mustang softball team would like to get in a game today.
Monday's scheduled game against LR McClellan was canceled due to water soaked fields.
Today, the Lady Mustangs were to have travelled to Stuttgart for a conference game against the Lady Ricebirds, but Forrest City Coach Sue Jayroe said at press time, the two teams were trying to move the game to the Forrest City Sports Complex, because Stuttgart's fields were still under water.

Michael Lane of Forrest City won the Arkansas State Golden Gloves championship last weekend in competition held at North Little Rock's Community Center.
Lane defeated Bernard Hudson of Crossett Friday in three rounds (TKO) and then defeated Shaun Huff of Little Rock in a unanimous decision Saturday.
Lane, who stands 6-4 and weighs 236, advances to the four-man Midsouth Tournament, which will be held April 12-14, at the North Little Rock Community Center.
Lane was the only boxer from Forrest City involved in last weekend's state championships.
Lane boxes in the super heavyweight division (201 pounds and higher).
The Midsouth tournament includes Lane as well as the champions from West Tennessee, North Mississippi and Northern Louisiana.
Lane, who made his amateur debut in January, is coached by Jimmy Hendrix of Wynne. He is 3-0 as an amateur with one knockout.
The Forrest City Law Enforcement Officers will take on the challenge of the Federal Correctional Institute Employees in a benefit basketball game, scheduled for Saturday, March 17, at the Barn inside Forrest City Junior High.
The game will tip at 5 p.m.
Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students. Concessions will be provided and all proceeds from the game will go to the March of Dimes Foundation.
