Rotary, Cochran headed for Bambino showdown

POPS ends losing streak with win over Taco Bell

After opening with four straight wins, Hess Shoes dropped its second straight game Tuesday night, losing to Rotary Club 5-3 in Bambino (11-12) League action at the Sports Complex.

Hess (4-2) fell from the undefeated ranks last Friday losing to Cochran Auto 12-3.

Rotary's win over Hess, coupled with Cochran's 13-6 win over Taylor Glass Tuesday, leaves the two teams in a first-place tie for the league lead. Both Rotary and Cochran are 5-1 for the year and will go head-to-head Friday for the second time this season at 6 p.m.

Rotary won the first meeting, 8-1, back on May 4.

Rotary got another superb pitching performance Tuesday from Taylor Clark, who scattered seven hits while walking nine and striking out 13.

Rotary scored four runs in the top of the third inning and added a single run in the fourth to lead 4-0 before Hess avoided the shut out by scoring a single run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Justin Siler, Michael Holland and Alan Triggs provided the Hess scoring.

Julian Isom, Clark, Kyle Ramsey, Garritt Clark and D.J. Lindsey each scored for Rotary.

Cochran got a combined pitching effort from Kendall Rucker and D.J. Crowell in their win over Taylor.

Blake Davis scored three runs while Justin Cochran, Kellon Bowman and Rucker scored two runs each.

Joe DeWitt and Brandon Barnett combined for the Taylor pitching duties while Wilson Parker led the team in scoring with two runs. Donnie Willis, Rylan Nimocks, A.J. Moody and DeWitt scored single runs.

Bonanza 11, Vaccaro 10

Bonanza improved to 3-3 for the year Tuesday edging Vaccaro Lumber 11-10.

Bonanza used a big eight run, fourth inning to erase a 4-0 Vaccaro lead.

Vaccaro scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but left the tying run at second base when the game-ending out was made.

Tyler McCluskey hit a grand slam home run for Bonanza in the fourth, following a three-run triple by Justin Morgan. Johnnie Jones and Larry Bean each scored twice to lead the team.

McCluskey, Torrey Rogers, Terrence Pendleton, Leonard Banks, Morgan, Jacob Shafer and Jonathan Cottrell each scored single runs.

Vaccaro got two runs each from Will Malone and Kyle Emerson and single runs from Trenton Ware, Cody Flowers, Dale Boyd, Justin Harris and Lawrence Watson.

POPS 17, Taco Bell 3

POPS ended a three-game losing streak Tuesday by rolling past Taco Bell 17-3.

POPS scored four runs in the top of the second inning and added three runs in the third and 10 runs in the fourth.

Brently Washington and Justin Ross each homered for POPS. Ross and Nakieer Barton each scored three runs while Kenny Norman, James Green and Jeremy Golatt added two runs each.

Barton pitched the complete game, giving up the three runs on seven hits while striking out five Taco Bell hitters.

Taco Bell, 1-5 for the season, got runs from William Mitchell, Parker Whittenton and Andre Stephens.


Boar's Head nails down first win of the year in 16-under play

Boar's Head needed only three innings Tuesday night to record their first win of the year, a 15-12 decision over Food Giant, in girls' 16-under fast-pitch softball.

Samone Gardner hit a home run for the winners and led a quartet of Boar's Head players who scored two runs each -- Risondra Deans, Kandace Ivory and Allison Dulaney.

Food Giant opened a 4-0 lead in the top of the first but Boar's Head took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the inning.

A four run, second inning put Food Giant back on top 8-5 but once again, Boar's Head answered by scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-8 lead.

Food Giant managed one run in the third to trail 10-9 but fell behind 15-8 going into the top of the fourth.

Brittani Smith and Jessica Long led Food Giant by scoring three runs each while Kristen Fryer scored twice.

Sanyo 12, Clay Funeral Home 7

Sanyo shocked Clay Funeral Home Tuesday by taking a 12-7 win.

It was Sanyo's second straight win of the year and it was Clay's second consecutive loss.

Sanyo and Clay Funeral were tied at 7-7 headed into the fourth inning, which saw Sanyo score five runs to lead 12-7.

Clay went down in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Bridgett Clark, Kim Ursery and Sharhonda Jackson each scored two runs each to pace Sanyo.

Clay got runs from Angela Williams, Andrea Cooper and Christy Emerson and slips to 3-2-1 for the season.

Sanyo improves to 3-3 for the year.

McDonald's 18, Bonanza 7

McDonald's moved into third place in the 16-under league standings Tuesday with an 18-7 win over Bonanza.

Casey Qualls and Torri Willis each scored three runs to pace the McDonald's offense while Jessica Lewis, Kylie Moore and Whitney Tracy scored two runs each.

McDonald's, 4-3 for the year, scored five runs in the second inning and added four in the third and five in the fourth to post the win.

Bonanza, 3-3, got runs from Ashley Barton, Stacey Gracey, Alicia Kennedy, Lauren Dover, Shardavia Davis and Melissa Smith.

Dr. St. John, the league leader, was idle Tuesday night but will return to action on Friday against Bonanza at 9:15 p.m.

In other games set for Friday, Food Giant will play Clay at 9 p.m. and Sanyo will take on McDonald's at 9 p.m.


Steven's gets first win of year

Steven's Funeral Home posted their first win of the year Tuesday night by shutting out Walker Insurance 6-0 in 10-under slow-pitch softball.

Steven's scored five runs in the top of the first inning and added a single run in the second, led by Taylor Billingsley's two runs scored.

Alexandra Dooley, Mary Hodges, Kelsey Ferguson and Caitlin Hargraves scored single runs.

Sanyo stayed unbeaten for the year but had to survive a solid effort by Dr. Schwartz.

Trailing 8-7 going into the bottom of the sixth, Sanyo tied the game at 8-8 when Chantal Driver scored and won the game with two outs when Amber Jones scored from third on a base hit by Tikeyah Holloway.

Sanyo is 7-0 and remains tied for the league lead with Title Company, a 5-4 winner over Food Giant.

Sanyo and Title Company will play each other Friday night.

Dr. Schwartz got runs from Jasmine Rucker, Savannah Ferguson and Mishanna Morgan.

In other games, Mom's got past Southern Furniture 6-4 led by Arlenna Richmond.

Forrest City Bank managed just two runs but it was enough to take a 2-0 win over True Value Tuesday night.

Forrest City Bank improves to 3-4 for the year.

FCB scored a single run in the first by Megan Meridith and added a run in the fourth by Brittany Wilson.

True Value did not get a runner past second base.

Title Company stayed unbeaten at 7-0 but had to score twice in the bottom of the sixth to do so.

Food Giant scored three times in the fifth to lead 4-2. Title Company got a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to win it.

Katie Davis scored the winning run after Kimesha Norris tied the game at 4-4.

Megan White led Food Giant with two runs.


Short-handed Taylor-Casbeer goes to 7-0

Taylor-Casbeer ran their season record to 7-0 Tuesday by turning back Joey's Muffler 11-3 in Minor League play.

Taylor-Casbeer got the win, despite missing five players and using just eight in the line up.

Brian Morgan scored three runs to lead Taylor-Casbeer while Tyler McElroy and Trenton Neeley scored two runs each.

Taylor-Casbeer capped the victory by scoring six runs in the sixth inning.

Blake Lester, Jarki Jackson and Michael Ludwig scored the three Joey's runs.

Jackson homered in the fourth.

Joey's slips to 2-5 for the year.

Farm Bureau 11, Dr. Beasley 5

A.J. Martin scored three runs to help lead Farm Bureau to its first win of the year, an 11-5 victory over Dr. Beasley Tuesday.

Will Whittenton and Andre Dulaney added two runs each while Herbert Barlow, Jacob Sanders, Wesley Rice and Brandon Davis scored single runs.

Martin homered in the second inning.

Dr. Beasley got two runs each from Brodie Johnson and Quinton Jones and a single run from Caleb Sugg.

Dr. Beasley falls to 1-6 for the year.


Giffin's comes from behind to post win over Debbie's

Giffin's Grins scored three times in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday night to post a 13-12 come-from-behind win over Debbie's Flowers in 12-under fast-pitch softball.

Giffin's trailed 12-10 going into the inning.

Kemeshia Chism, Cassandra Jackson and Ikeshia Chism each scored single runs in the final at-bat to give Giffin's the win.

Jackson led the team in scoring with three runs while the Chism's scored two runs each.

Debbie's Flowers took the lead by scoring five runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Leigh Anna Taylor led the offense by scoring three times. Nan Thompson and Charlie Miller scored two runs each.

Crowley's 13, Children's Clinic 6

Crowley's won its second straight game, a 13-6 win over Children's Clinic Tuesday night.

Kayla Ballard and Dekesha Huff scored three times each.

Children's Clinic got runs from Elaina Patton, Bailey Pettus, Sunni Dunn and Kayla Grantham.

Crowley's will take on league-leading Times-Herald Friday night while Children's Clinic will take on Debbie's Flowers.


Registration under way now for basketball, football camps

The deadline to sign up for the upcoming Forrest City youth summer basketball and football camps has been extended to June 1.

The series of camps will begin with the Lady Mustang-Mustang Elementary Camp, June 11-14, at Mustang Arena.

Both camps are for those youths who will be entering third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades in the fall.

The girls camp will be held from 8 until 11 a.m. each morning while the boys will meet from 12 noon until 3 p.m.

* A junior high camp for boys and girls, who will be entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades in the fall, will be held July 9-12.

The junior girls will meet from 8 until 11 a.m. while the junior boys will meet from 12 noon until 3 p.m.

* An elementary football camp for those youths going into fourth, fifth and sixth grades, will be held June 18-20 at the athletic complex.

The camp will be held from 8 until 11 a.m., each day and like the basketball camps, is free for those who wish to attend.

Registration forms are available at all Forrest City elementary and junior high school offices.


Adult baseball league forming

The Northeast Arkansas Adult Baseball League (age 18 & over) is looking for new teams to join us in the 2001 season.

The league is also looking for individual players to fill rosters on the new teams. finding teams.

Play will begin in mid-June, and most games are played on Sunday afternoons.
