Midsouth Marathon set for Nov. 3rd

The third annual Midsouth Marathon will be run on Saturday, Nov. 3,, in Wynne.

The race will begin at Yellowjacket Stadium on the Wynne High School campus at 8 a.m.

Tournament Director David Reagler said that so far approximately 150 have registered to run in this year's race.

"We're expecting about 300 when all of the sign-ups in," Reagler said.

The marathon will cover 13.1 miles, which will weave through the Wynne city streets and then out Highway 64B to Levesque, where the course takes a northward turn for eight miles up Highway 163 to the turn-around point and back to the finish line at Yellowjacket Stadium.

Reagler said runners from across the United States have signed up as well as several well-known runners from the Little Rock and Memphis areas.

There is also a wheelchair division for those who need it.

For more information contact Reagler at (870) 238-4235 or (870) 238-5528.

Hats off to Hughes Junior High Coach Bert Greenwell whose Junior Blue Devils ended the season at 6-1 overall and second in the 6AAA Conference.

The Junior Blue Devils defeated DeWitt last Thursday 34-14 to cap their very successful year.

Greenwell came back to Hughes after a year away from the coaching ranks.

He had plenty of help on the sidelines this year from assistants Steve Maynard and James Wright.

And while we're on the subject, how about the senior high Blue Devils.

With just three seniors on the roster this season, Wright's Blue Devils are in a tie for second place in the 6AAA and have qualified for a berth in the Class AAA state playoffs.

The Blue Devils can clinch second place outright on Friday when they take on Brinkley in a big league showdown at Blue Devil Stadium.

That's something to be excited about, since the Blue Devils are dropping down to Class AA for the 2002-2004 cycle and right into the same football conference with Palestine-Wheatley.

The basketball leagues will be a little different.

Hughes senior Robert Davis, a member of both the football, track and basketball teams, has been named as a state finalist for the Wendy's Heisman Trophy, which recognizes students for their scholastic and athletic abilities as well as for their roles in the community.

Nominees must have a least a 3.0 GPA and must participate in at least one of the 32 sports officially sanctioned by National Federation of State High School Associations.

The most recent word from Ruston, La. is that Louisiana Tech coach Leon Barmore is very pleased with his Lady Techsters' early basketball workouts.

Just over one week into fall practice, Barmore likes what he has seen thus far from his 2001-02 Lady Techster squad, especially from incoming true freshman Erica Smith, who played her junior high and high school basketball at Palestine-Wheatley.

Smith has also made an early impression. The 5-foot-10 guard should add quality depth to the Techster back court.

"I have been pleased with the play of Erica Smith," Barmore said. "She has looked good in practice, and I expect her to contribute a great deal this year."

Louisiana Tech will host the Basketball Travelers Nov. 4 in an exhibition contest at 2 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center.

Barmore's Lady Techsters began workouts Oct. 13 in preparation for the season opener Nov. 16 against Michigan.

Tech has all five starters and nine letter winners back from last year's 31-5 team that made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

Although neither the Associated Press nor the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Polls have been released yet, most experts believe the Lady Techsters are legitimate contenders for the 2002 Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.

Forrest City students are reorganizing the school's chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The chapter has not been active since the early 80s.

Several of the Forrest City coaches including Sue Jayroe, Amber Main and Lewis Etheridge are helping in the process.

The FCA is geared toward students in sixth through 12th grade.

More on this effort later.
