NEWPORT--The Brown brothers combined for over 300 yards rushing and quarterback Zach Lewallen passed for two scores and ran for another as Newport picked up its first win of the season Friday night at the expense of the Forrest City Mustangs.
Building a 21-0 half time lead, the Greyhounds went on to claim a 28-14 victory -- the school's sixth straight win over Forrest City, since the series began in 1996.
It was the first loss of the season, officially, for the Mustangs, who slip to 2-1 to finish the nonconference portion of their schedule.
The Mustangs open AAAAA-East Conference play this Friday, when they host the Jonesboro Hurricane.
Newport senior running back Jerry Brown ran for 173 yards on 23 carries and scored one touchdown while his younger brother, sophomore Fred Brown chewed up 128 yards on 15 carries to lift the Greyhounds, 1-2 for the year.
Jerry Brown's 18-yard touchdown run with 3:13 left in the first quarter game opened the Newport scoring.
Lewallen then connected for two touchdown passes in the final 6:34 of the first half to put the Greyhounds up 21-0 at the break.
Lewallen's first scoring pass, a 15-yarder, went to Brent Martin. His second was an eight-yarder to Lavar Wyatt.
Lewallen's one-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, followed by the last of Adam Fields' four point-after kicks, gave Newport a 28-0 lead.
Forrest City scored both of its touchdowns in the final period.
Junior quarterback Austin Easley got the Mustangs on the scoreboard when he found senior tailback Montrell Ashcraft for an eight-yard pass.
The touchdown was set up when Forrest City recovered a Newport fumble and returned to the Newport 10-yard line.
Easley's four-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Gore provided the Mustangs' second touchdown of the game, with about three minutes to play.
The Mustangs managed just 95 total yards on offense -- 39 through the air and 56 on the ground. Combined, Forrest City's two quarterbacks, Justin Edwards and Easley completed 5-of-20 attempts.
The Mustangs suffered two turnovers -- a lost fumble and one interception.
Newport ran up 355 yards in total offense -- 332 of that total on the ground.
The Mustangs opened the season with an 18-6 loss to Osceola, but had that decision reversed when Osceola admitted using an ineligible player.
The next week, Forrest City shut out Marianna 29-0.

The Colts weren't quite finished.
