Mr. George Dabney Rives Jr., age 82, of Memphis, died Thursday, April 18, 2002, at Methodist Healthcare-Central in Memphis.
Mr. Rives was born in Sunflower, Miss., the son of George Rives Sr. and Clare Rives. Mr. Dabney was a veteran of World War II and served in the Burma-China-India Theater. He was a retired chemical engineer for Lily Industrial Coatings. He was a graduate of Mississippi State University and a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Memphis where he served as an elder.
Mr. Rives is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gladys Skinner Rives. He is also survived by four daughters, Sandra Mozingo of Walls, Miss., Dr. Jackie McBride of Jonesboro, Georgia Anne Henderson of Trumann and Nancy Dunaway of Forrest City; a son, George Dabney Rives III, of Nesbit, Miss.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Rives; two brothers, Julian Wray Rives and Jack Rives and a sister, Lane Rives Smith.
Funeral services for Mr. Rives were held Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Covenant Presbyterian Church with burial following in Indianola, Miss. Forrest Hill Funeral Home Midtown, of Memphis, was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. J. Harvey Shaw Sr., age 97, of Forrest City, died Sunday, April 21, 2002.
Mr. Shaw, formerly of Batesville, Miss., was born Oct. 17, 1904, in Pope, Miss. He was the son of Alonzo and Molly Eubanks Shaw. Mr. Shaw was a retired educator and a member of Coleman Chapel AME Zion Church in Batesville, Miss.
Mr. Shaw is survived by two daughters, Gwendolyn Shaw Cooper of St. Louis, Mo. and Sarah Shaw Jones, of Forrest City; two sons, J. Harvey Shaw Jr. of Moro and James E. Shaw of Batesville, Miss.; 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Shaw will be held Friday, April 26, 2002, at noon at Coleman Chapel AME Zion Church in Batesville, Miss., with Rev. Troy Roscoe Sr., officiating. Burial will follow in Batesville Cemetery under the direction of Cooley's Mortuary Inc. of Batesville, Miss.
