Mr. LeRoy James Handcock, age 73, of Palestine, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
Mr. Handcock, born Sept. 5, 1928, in Fargo, was the son of John Handcock and Felma Norrington Handcock. He was a veteran and a retiree of MacDonnell Douglas/Boeing Aircraft Co. Mr. Handcock was a former Negro League baseball player with several teams including the Memphis Red Sox and New Orleans Eagles. He was also a tenor in the Rainbow Quartet.
Mr. Handcock is survived by three daughters, Alberta Handcock of Pontiac, Mich., Sharon Butler of St. Louis, Mo., and Elnora Guy of Long Beach, Calif.; two sons, Clyde Gray of Colt and Leonard Hall of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Helen Witherspoon of St. Louis, Mo., Essie Avant of Forrest City, Samella Robinson of Flint, Mich., and Ruthie McFadden of Mt. Morris, Mich.; four brothers, Eugene Handcock of Anoka, Minn., Eddie Handcock of Pueblo, Colo., and John Handcock and Clarence Handcock, both of St. Louis, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation services for Mr. Handcock will be held Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Woodhouse Mortuary. Funeral services for Mr. Handcock will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Elcannon Baptist Church with Rev. Albert McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in Clark Cemetery under the direction of Woodhouse Mortuary.
Ms. Marguerite B. McCarty, age 88, of Forrest City, died Thursday, July 25, 2002, at the Beverly Healthcare Nursing Home in Heber Springs.
Ms. McCarty was born Nov. 2. 1913, in Jacksonville, Fla., the daughter of Harry McCarty and C. Victoria Butler McCarty. She made her home in Forrest City for most of her life, was a 1931 graduate of Forrest City High School, an accomplished pianist, a member of the First United Methodist Church and worked for the Farmers Home Administration for 30 years.
Ms. McCarty is survived by one Godchild, Marguerite Chapman of Heber Springs, and two cousins, Darthy Tyrity of Hot Springs and Willa Savelle of Columbus, Miss.
Services for Ms. McCarty were held graveside on Sunday, July 28, 2002, at Forrest Park Cemetery under the dierction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Mrs. Odine McNeal, age 75, of Forrest City, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Crestpark Retirement Inn.
Mrs. McNeal, born April 5, 1927, in Forrest City, was the daughter Jessie Lewis and Annie Posey Lewis. She is survived by three sisters, Sarah Sneed of Auburndale, Fla., and Bernice Rogers and Irene Byndom, both of Forrest City; six brothers, James Lewis of Detroit, Mich., Williams Lewis of Zion, Ill., Marcus Lewis, Abraham Lewis, Sammy Lewis and McArthur Lewis, all of Forrest City; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Mrs. McNeal will be held Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Woodhouse Mortuary. Funeral services for Mrs. McNeal will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002 at 3 p.m. at Days Temple Church of God in Christ with Pastor Theo Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Forrest City Cemetery. Woodhouse Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lonzo Thompson, age 49, of Chicago, Ill. , and formerly of Colt, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002.
Mr. Thompson is survived by one sister, Ruthie Mae Thompson of Jonesboro; and five brothers, Henry Lee Thompson of Wynne, Chester Thompson of Collierville, Tenn., Willie C. Thompson, Howard Thompson, and Harold Thompson all of Sweet Home.
Services for Mr. Thompson will be held Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at 1 p.m at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Caldwell with burial to follow in Clark Cemetery in Caldwell. Johnson Funeral Home in Wynne is in charge of all arrangements.
Mr. William Carl Wheeler, age 61, of Wheatley, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002 at his home.
Mr. Wheeler was born Dec. 9, 1940 in Moro, the son of Virgil Albert Wheeler and Maurine Vondron Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler was a 1958 graduate of Marianna High School, a member of the Brinkley Lodge #295, the Albert Pike and William Nash Temples of 32* Mason, the Sahara Shrine Temple of Pine Bluff, district manager for Riceland Foods were he worked for 42 years and a Baptist.
Mr. Wheeler is survived by his wife, Lucy Derrick Wheeler; one son, Adam Cain Wheeler of Marion; two daughters, Donna Kay Hunt of Marion and Pat Cary of Wheatley; two brothers, Bennie Lewis Wheeler and Gary Don Wheeler both of Moro; one sister, Kathy Darlene Skarda of Carlisle; and four grandchildren.
Visitation for Mr. Wheeler will be held Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002 at Bob Neal and Sons Funeral Home in Brinkley from 6 to 8 p.m. Services will be held Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Brinkley with Rev. Cain Wheeler officiating with Rev. Jim McDaniel assisting. Burial will follow in Johnston Cemetery in Wheatley. The family requests that memorials be made to the Brinkley First Baptist Church or Heartline Christian Fellowship.
