Gym 2000 put together an undefeated run Saturday to win the adult men's Red, White & Blue Softball Tournament played at the Forrest City Sports Complex.

Gym 2000 turned back the West Helena Hit Men in the semifinals and again in the championship game.

The Wolfpac finished third and Forrest City Kerby's held on to finish fourth.

The tournament drew 10 teams to the Sports Complex and was sponsored by the Forrest City Police and Fire Departments.

Gym 2000 rolled to the tourney title by disposing of the Slobber Knockers, the Wolfpac, and the Hit men twice.

*The Forrest City adult men's softball league will close out the 2002 regular season schedule tonight beginning at 7 p.m.

Barnes Timber, unbeaten at 23-0 and the league champion, will face M&T Paving at 8 p.m. M&T is trying to finish second in the league.

It is the second matchup of the year between the two teams.

Barnes won the first game 23-2.

A win by Gym 2000 tonight and an M&T loss to Barnes would leave the two teams tied for second place.

Second week of drills critical for Mustangs

The Forrest City Mustangs began their second full week of football drills today with the team's final two-a-day session.

Fourth-year Head Coach Donnie Willis says this week will be "a critical time of preparation" for the Mustangs.

Critical due to a change in the practice schedule and critical because it is the final full week of summer vacation for the kids who return to classes on Aug. 19.

Since teachers report back on Tuesday, the Mustangs will begin practicing in the afternoon only.

Willis said the first week was good with the exception of having to deal with some "continuity" problems.

"We have several kids who have not been able to be at the afternoon practice because of jobs," Willis said. "It's hard for them to get in the groove with the others. Now by going one time in the afternoon, that should help the situation."

Willis said the Mustangs will put on the pads for the first time Thursday.

"They are looking forward to that," Willis said. "They think they are ready, but I'm not so sure they are ready for some of the things ahead."

Willis said the team will work hard on learning the basics.

The Mustangs will open the 2002 football season on Friday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Wynne.

Wynne opened summer drills last Wednesday with about 75 players reporting.
