Sheridan rains 'threes' to stop Lady Mustangs

By FRED CONLEY

CABOT -- A very fundamentally solid Sheridan team kept the Forrest City Lady Mustangs from getting into the Cabot Invitational Tournament's championship game Wednesday.

Sheridan effectively shut down Forrest City's leading scorer, Caronica Randle, holding the senior forward to just seven points. Randle eventually fouled out of the game.

And it didn't hurt that Sheridan hit seven, three-pointers in a 70-52 win over the Lady Mustangs.

Forrest City will play Harding Academy Saturday at 10 a.m., for fifth place in a rematch of Monday's first-round game, won by the Lady Mustangs.

"Sheridan just rained threes on us," said Forrest City Coach Sue Jayroe, "We had our hands in their faces all night and they still hit the threes."

By contrast, the Lady Mustangs hit just three, threes -- two of those by sophomore Viveca Kimble, who finished with six points.

Katrina Floyd played her best game of the season and led the Lady Mustangs with 16 points and Trina Wynne added 10 points, Sequoria Grady added four and Kanetra Pendleton finished with five.

Sheridan led 17-13 after the first period and pushed their lead to 10 at the half, 34-24.

Forrest City chipped away at the lead in the third and got within four points but got no closer.

"Each time we got close, they would hit a three or make a big play and hold us off," Jayroe said. "We couldn't get over that hump. They are a good team. They made the adjustments against us when they had too. It didn't hurt that they shot lights out from the floor."

Sheridan will face Sylvan Hills in Saturday's championship game at 1 p.m., while Cabot and Conway will play at 11:30 a.m., for third place.

The Forrest City Mustangs will play Conway tonight in the boys' bracket of the Cabot Tournament in the championship game, which is set to tip at 7:30 p.m.

Both the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs have all next week off and will not play against until Monday, Dec. 16, when they host Sylvan Hills at Mustang Arena.

*In other tournament action tonight, the Hughes Blue Devils will open play at the 18th annual Hurricane Classic at Jonesboro.

Hughes will play Overton, Tenn., at 4 p.m.

*At DeWitt, the Palestine-Wheatley Patriots will take on Holly Grove tonight at 5:30 p.m., in semifinal play at the DeWitt Invitational Tournament.

P-W, off to a 3-0 start, defeated White Hall 47-41 Tuesday behind 24 points from DeVille Pickett.

A win tonight puts P-W into Saturday's title game at 8:30 p.m.
