P-W teams fall short of state; Blue Devils draw Prescott

SEARCY -- Des Arc had little trouble Against defending Class AA champ Palestine-Wheatley Friday, taking a 48-34 win over the Lady Patriots and ending P-W's season short of a fourth consecutive state tournament appearance.

The Augusta Red Devils ended the Palestine-Wheatley Patriots' year on Friday, winning 79-60 in regional semifinal action.

Oliver Smith scored 16 points for the Patriots.

The Hughes Blue Devils will open Class AAA State Tournament play on Thursday, when they face Prescott at 2:30 p.m., at Beebe High School.

The Blue Devils lost to Pulaski Academy Friday night in the Region 3 semifinals and then defeated Lonoke on Saturday in consolation play to earn the No. 3 seed into the state tournament.

Prescott is the No. 2 seed from Region 4.

Chrisana Furnell led Des Arc with a game-high 25 points and Deaundra Williams added 10. The Lady Patriots got 10 points from LaRhonda Bender.

The loss ended P-W's Beverly Bass tenure as head coach of the Lady Patriots. Bass said before the season began this would be her final year.

The Lady Patriots won the Class AA title last year after losing to Greenland in the AA finals the two previous seasons.

Harding Academy eliminated Barton in Friday's other semifinal game and then disposed of Des Arc on Saturday to win the regional title.

Blue Devils finish third at regional

LITTLE ROCK The Hughes Blue Devils evened the score with the Lonoke Jackrabbits Saturday.

Hughes' Malcolm Curne hit two free throws with no time left to give his team a 64-62 win over Lonoke in the third-place game of the Region 3 Tournament Saturday afternoon at Pulaski Academy High School.

The win tied the season series with the Jackrabbits at 2-2.

Tied at 62-62 following a Lonoke free throw with 20.8 seconds left, Hughes' Lonnie Smith missed a tough chance from the right wing. After a scramble for the loose ball, Curne came up with it and was fouled by Lonoke's Skippy Norman at the buzzer.

Norman led all scorers with 23 points. Jeremy McClain had 11. Robert Davis led Hughes with 15 points. Antonio Cotton and Smith had 14 points each. Curne had 11.

The Blue Devils will begin defense of their Class AAA state title Thursday at 2:30 p.m. against the Prescott Curley Wolves at the Badger Sports Arena in Beebe.

Wynne's Williams inks with Tigers

LITTLE ROCK -- Running back DeAngelo Williams of Wynne signed with University of Memphis on Sunday.

Williams had made a verbal commitment to Arkansas at one point. But by the Feb. 6 signing day, he was undecided.

''It came down to the travel, playing time and academics,'' his mother, Sandra Hill, said Sunday.

Williams shared the title of running back on The Associated Press Super Team named in December. At 5-foot-9, 207 pounds, he runs the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds.

As a senior, he rushed for 2,204 yards and 34 touchdowns on 212 carries as Wynne won the Class AAAA championship.
