Tommy Bargery

Mr. Tommy Bargery, age 62, of Pine Tree, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Bargery was born Aug. 17, 1939, in Memphis, and was the son of George Henry Bargery and Birdie Lee Zachary Bargery. He lived in Parkin and Earle before moving to St. Francis County. Mr. Bargery was a truck driver, a mechanic for D.F. Hammonds, and was a member of the Pine Tree Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine Fryer Bargery; one son, Eric Henry Bargery of Pine Tree; one daughter, Laura Lynn Brimhall of Wynne; two brothers, Doyle Bargery of Memphis and Richard Bargery of West Memphis; three sisters, Alice Lavelle Horton of West Memphis, Birdie Catherine Booher and Pat Morgan, both of Memphis; and four grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Bargery will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at 10 a.m., at Pine Tree Baptist Church, with burial following in Barnishaw Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.


Lloyd Bates

Mr. Lloyd Bates, age 59, of Forrest City, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Bates was a machine operator.

He is survived by five daughters, Denise Veasley of Jonesboro, Toni Bates Toles, Felicia Bates McGlown and Melissa Bates, all of Memphis, and Kristy Lay of Forrest City; his mother, Irene Johnson; four sisters, Mae Nabors and Marva Garrett, both of Forrest City, Patricia Miles of Los Angeles, Calif., and Pamela Jackson of Dallas, Texas; six brothers, Richard Bates of Leighton, Ala., Lawrence Williams of Madison, Ala., Ruben Johnson and Lanell Johnson, both of Forrest City, Harvey Johnson of Hammon, Ind., and Willie Johnson of Chicago, Ill.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation for Mr. Bates will be Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Kennedy Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at 1 p.m., at Rising Sun M.B. Church, with Rev. Strong officiating the service. Burial will follow in Casteel Cemetery under the direction of Kennedy Funeral Home.


Grover Lee Mangold

Mr. Grover Lee Mangold, age 60, of Forrest City, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at Baptist Hospital - East in Memphis.

Mr. Mangold was born July 25, 1941, in Palestine, and was the son of Thomas H. Mangold and Sylvia Mae Gentry Mangold. He lived in St. Francis County most of his life, was the retired owner of Grover's Muffler Shop, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and he was a Baptist.

Mr. Grover married Veronica 'Ronnie' McCarty in 1963, and she survives him along with two daughters, Lynn King of Dumas and Tammy Hayden of Palestine; two brothers, George A. Mangold of Forrest City and Thomas Eugene Mangold of Lexa; and one sister, Madonna Brooks of Fordyce.

Visitation for Mr. Mangold is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at 1 p.m., at Stevens Funeral Home, with burial following in Barnishaw Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.


Robert Edwin Porter

Mr. Robert Edwin Porter, age 72, of Newbern, Tenn., died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, in Dyersburg.

Mr. Porter was born July 3, 1929, in Newbern, Tenn., and was the son of Sheffer Porter and Blanche Jones Porter. He was a former president of the Forrest City Chamber of Commerce, served on the St. Francis County School Board, was chairman of the East Arkansas Community College Board and chairman of Forrest Memorial Hospital Board.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Polk Porter of Newbern; one son, Robert Edwin Porter, Jr. of Fisherville, Tenn.; four daughters, Savilla Porter Wolf, Julia Driver Porter, and Amanda Porter Jenkins, all of Newbern, and Janet Porter Jackson of Harrisburg and seven grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. Porter will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 1 p.m., at Fairview Cemetery in Newbern, Tenn., with Rev. William T. Jowery officiating the service, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.


Mary Chew Scarborough

Mrs. Mary Chew Scarborough, age 84, of Russellville, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville.

Mrs. Scarborough was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Forrest City, and was the daughter of William Dawson and Carrie Chew Dawson. She was a 1936 graduate of Forrest City High School, owned and operated a furniture store in Belaire, Texas, and was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church in Russellville.

She was preceded in death by her husband L.H. Scarborough, in 1983.

A memorial service for Mrs. Scarborough will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at 10 a.m., at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Russellville, with Rev. Pat Seymour officiating, with homily given by Helen Hargraves. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m., at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Forrest City, with Rev. Tom Newman officiating, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Elton Williams, Sr.

Mr. Elton Williams, Sr., age 90, of Forrest City, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Williams was a retired farmer and a member of Beth Salem M.B. Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carline Williams; five daughters, Cornelia Datham of Memphis; Ernastine Hunter of Bollingbrook, Ill., Christine Wyett of Bellwood, Ill., Earline Smith of Jonesboro and Arline Mobley of Forrest City; two sons, Elton Williams, Jr., of Barton and Edward Williams of Alarton, Ill.; two sisters, Mary Lee Kennedy of Forrest City and Mary Watkins Jones of Memphis; four brothers, Ceroy, Eddie Lee, James and Joe Watkins, all of Memphis; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Williams will be held Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Kennedy Chapel Funeral Home in Forrest City. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at 1 p.m., at Beth Salem M.B. Church, with Rev. Vernon Faulkner officiating the service. Burial will follow in Casteel Cemetery under the direction of Kennedy Funeral Home.
