Patriots stay hot with win over Lions

CLARENDON -- Palestine-Wheatley got 31 points from Deville Pickett, including three, three-pointers, Tuesday night to take a 67-48 win over the Clarendon Lions in a 6AA Conference game.

The Patriots' latest victory keeps them in second place in the conference behind league-leading and unbeaten Altheimer.

Clarendon's Marcus Gilmore led the Lions with 16 points while Ephraim Amos added 10 points.

Oliver Smith added 10 points for the Patriots.

After leading by just one point, 29-28 at the half, Palestine-Wheatley outscored the Lions 16-to-12 in the third to take a five-point lead into the start of the fourth period at 45-40.

The Patriots led by as many as 10 points in the third before the Lions crept back into the picture to keep it close.

Quenton Mason drained a running jumper to put the Patriots up 47-41 early in the fourth period and Pickett's long jumper made it 53-44 with four minutes to play.

Smith added a pair of free throws to push the P-W lead to 55-44 and the Patriots went on to outscore the Lions 12-to-4 over the last three minutes to set the final score.

P-W led 13-9 after the first period but the Lions forced five ties in the second period before falling behind by one at the half.

The Patriots have three conference games remaining before the start of the 6AA district tournament.

P-W plays at Barton Friday night, then will host Altheimer on Feb. 5 before ending the regular season with a road trip to Elaine on Feb. 7.

Senior Girls

Senior guard Nikki Bass led three Lady Patriots with 14 points each in a 71-37 win over the Clarendon Lady Lions Tuesday.

LaRhonda Bender and Libby Martin also finished with 14 points while Brittney Flenory added 10 and Nikita Love finished wtih nine in the 6AA Conference victory.

The Lady Patriots improve to 12-10 overall and 8-1 in the conference with three league games left to play.

Tiffany Dawson scored 13 points to lead the Lady Lions while Megan Tumlison finished with 10.

The Lady Patriots face Barton Friday night in a game that will most likely determine the conference champion.

Barton, undefeated in league play, turned back the Lady Patriots 48-37 earlier this month at Palestine-Wheatley.

The Lady Patriots came out strong to take a 20-6 lead after the opening period, getting eight points from Bender.

They outscored the Lady Lions 15-to-7 in the second period to lead 35-13 at the half.

The Lady Patriots led by as many as 30 points in the second half.

Junior Boys

Fred Leak and Vince Jones each scored 12 points Tuesday night to lead the Junior Patriots to a 53-29 win over the Junior Lions.

Curtis Allen added nine and Marcus Gardner chipped in seven.

P-W led 18-7 after the first period and 28-16 at the half.

It was the fourth straight win for the Junior Patriots, 10-3 overall for the year.

The junior boys are unbeaten in the 6AA Conference with one regular season game left to play.


Mustangs lose to Chicks; stay winless in East

Lady Mustangs fall to Lady Chicks

BLYTHEVILLE -- The conference bleeding continued for the Forrest City Mustangs Tuesday night.

DeMarcus Luster shined, leading Blytheville to a 63-48 win over the Mustangs in AAAAA-East play. Luster finished with 12 points.

The Chicks improve to 4-2 in the league which keeps them in third place.

The Mustangs fall to 2-15 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

Forrest City got 19 points from John Foreman in the loss, eight points from Vincent Hardaway and seven points from Omar Davis.

The Chicks used a 9-0 run late in the second period to snap a 19-19 tie on the way to taking a 28-19 lead at the half.

The Mustangs used a 9-2 run in the third period to slice Blytheville's lead to 34-28 forcing the Chicks into a time out.

After the break, Blytheville put together a 12-3 run to take a 46-31 lead over Forrest City to start the fourth period.

*Derrick Grant scored 17 points, Jeremy Brown 15 and Damon Harris 13 as Sylvan Hills ran its season record to 8-6, and its conference mark to 3-3 in the AAAAA-East with a 62-46 win over Cabot.

Tommy Williams led Cabot with16 points while Nick Roberts had 11.

Senior Girls

Forrest City's Lady Mustangs had the AAAAA-East conference game against Blytheville in the bag for three periods.

Then the Lady Chicks turned things around -- outscoring the Lady Mustangs 14-to-9 in the fourth period -- to get their first conference win of the season, 58-55.

Forrest City slips to 6-11 overall and 2-5 in the league.

Blytheville's Kenya Moore led all scorers with 27 points, 14 of that in the second half.

Deosha Agnew led Forrest City with 19 points while

Trina Wynne added 17 and Caronica Randle added 13.

The Lady Mustangs led 17-8 after one period, 32-24 at the half and 46-34 to start the fourth period.

*Brittany Goings scored 18 points to lead Cabot to a 64-60 overtime victory over Sylvan Hills Tuesday night.

It was the third straight conference win for Cabot and puts the Lady Panthers in fourth place in the current AAAAA-East standings.

Allie Gammill added 10 points for Cabot. Courteny Brown led Sylvan Hills with 20 points and Matealia Jordan added 16

Bobcats shock the Blue Devils 76-68

DUMAS -- The path to the 6AAA Conference title hit another snag Tuesday for the Hughes Blue Devils.

Earlier this month, the Blue Devils were handed their first conference loss of the year by Lonoke.

Tuesday night, the Blue Devils were dealt another blow by the Dumas Bobcats, who got 20 points from Rod Tatum which led to a 76-68 Bobcat win.

Dumas, 11-5 and 7-3, also got 19 points from Kerry Harris. Marlon Hill added 11 and Anthony Gray 10 for Dumas.

The Blue Devils, the Class AAA defending state champs, slip to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in the league with three regular season games left to play.

Hughes has England and Lonoke at home and wind up on the road at Pine Bluff Dollarway.

Lonoke has Brinkley, Hughes and DeWitt left while league front-runner Pine Bluff Dollarway has one game against Brinkley before finishing up with Hughes.

Senior Girls

Hughes' Valreneeka Brown scored 14 points, all in the third period, but it wasn't enough against Dumas as the Lady Blue Devils fell 80-53 Tuesday in 6AAA Conference play.

Dumas led 25-2 after one period and 43-16 at the half.

Hughes cut the Dumas lead to 13 points in the fourth but ran out of gas late in the final frame.

Latisha James added 11 points for Hughes while Victoria Doolittle had 10.

A win over England Friday night will give the Lady Blue Devils fifth place in the conference.

*Kim Matthews scored 17 points and Channing Gordon 11 to lead Pine Bluff Dollarway past Lonoke 49-38 in a 6AAA Conference game.

Tommie Reddick scored 14 points and Sarah Goodman added 12 for the Lady Jackrabbits.
