The Forrest City American Legion teams continued their winning ways Monday by taking down Searcy 4-2 in the A game played at the Sports Complex.

That victory was the third straight after Forrest City swept Lonoke Sunday afternoon.

The AAA team, after trailing just 3-2 early in the second game, lost 19-4 in the nightcap.

Jesse Whittemore scored twice for Forrest City in the A game while Charles Gaines scored a single run and Danny Flowers added a run.

Forrest City scored twice in the bottom of the first before Searcy cut the lead to 2-1 with a run in the top of the second inning.

Forrest City's lone hit came from Flowers, who finished 1-for-3 for the game.

Brandon Lynch broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when he hit a three-run home run off Whittemore to give Searcy a 3-0 lead.

Forrest City cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third when Logan Knight walked, took second on a ground out by Sean Northcutt and scored on a Searcy error.

Gaines reached base on another Searcy error, stole second and went to third on an error and stole home.

The bottom fell out for Forrest City in the top of the fourth when Searcy scored eight runs on seven hits and two Forrest City errors that left Searcy in control 11-2.

That wasn't the worst.

After leaving two base runners stranded in the bottom of the fourth, Forrest City gave up eight more runs to Searcy in the top of the fifth on just three hits as Searcy pushed the lead to 19-2.

Forrest City scratched out two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Gaines walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error.

Whittemore pitched into the fourth inning before being replaced by Knight and Jimmy Aldridge.

Forrest City will play at Stuttgart on Wednesday for an A-AAA doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

Forrest City returns on Saturday to take on Jonesboro in a road doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

Forrest City will host the district tournament at the Sports Complex set to be played July 11-15.

True Value moves into first place

By FRED CONLEY

Since a loss to Dr. Schawrtz back on June 4, True Value has not lost, reeling off eight consecutive victories.

That has made True Value the hottest team in the 10-under girls' slow-pitch league.

On June 18, True Value pulled into a three-way tie for first place in the league with co-leaders Schwartz and Food Giant by defeating Food Giant. Schwartz also lost that night to Steven's.

That left all three teams at 9-2 and the chase was on.

Monday night, Schwartz and Food Giant stumbled yet again, leaving True Value all alone in first place in the league standings at 13-2.

Steven's, also playing well by winning four of their last five, blanked Schwartz 12-0 Monday while Food Giant lost twice in make up games, falling to True Value 8-7 and then to Sanyo 9-7.

Schwartz stands at 12-3 for the year while Steven's and Food Giant are tied in the standings at 11-4. Sanyo improves to 9-6 for the year.

The league has three playing dates remaining, a regular season schedule tonight, makeup games from May 28 on Monday, July 8 and then regular season games scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, to close out the year.

In other games played Monday, Sanyo defeated Southern Furniture while Forrest City Bank defeated McDonald's. Title Company forfeited their game to Walker Insurance.

Barnes improves to 13-0 for the year.

Sanyo improved to 12-1 for the year and remained in second place in the league by taking down Morgan 14-3 while Gym 2000 held onto third place in the league with a 23-5 win over Food Giant.

M&T Paving is fourth at 11-3 after an 18-13 win over the Young Guns.

Boar's Head put down TSM Computers 15-7 and Miller Insurance defeated Greg's 17-5.

PB International downs FC for district title

PINE BLUFF -- Taking no chance with the District 7 Cal Ripken championship, the 10-year old Pine Bluff International All-Stars scored early and often, rolling over Forrest City 19-1 Monday night at Townsend Park.

Forrest City has qualified for state tournament play.

International scored two in the initial inning to take a lead which they never lost.

"Not taking anything away from Forrest City, because they're a good ballclub, but we hit the ball really well tonight," International manager Herbert Goins said.

International went through the tournament at their home park undefeated and will move on to the State Tournament which is scheduled to start Friday at Pine Bluff Seabrook.

In the bottom of the first, Jarius Wayman reached on an infield error with one out, and Daryl Broady walked. A fielders choice scored Wayman and Bryan "Popcorn" Coleman's infield single drove in the other run.

Forrest City cut the lead in half in the top of the second, picking up a run when Josh Taylor walked with one out, took second on a passed ball, and scored after an error in the International outfield.

International added four more in the second, picking up hits from Broady, Claude Johnson and Corey DeVose and took advantage of three Forrest City errors to go up 6-1 through two innings.

Sending 10 batters to the plate in the home half of the third, International picked up four more runs. Forrest City was guilty of three more errors.

A one out triple from Jamar McNeely produced another run in the fourth as he scored on an infield grounder by Wayman to put International up 11-1.

After a discussion with the umpires and both coaching staffs, the 10-run mercy rule was waived for the game and International went on to added eight more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, managing just three hits while Forrest City was charged with an additional three errors.

Four walks in the inning also resulted in runs for the International All-Stars.

Broady led the offensive attack for International, picking up three hits and two walks in five at-bats. Wayman had two hits, as did Coleman while Bruce Heird had the only two hits which Forrest City managed in the game.

Sebastian Stargell pitched the entire game for International and picked up the victory, striking out five and walking three.

"He (Stargell) pitched a great game," Goins said. "He moved the ball around and kept them off balance. We didn't call his pitches from the dugout, but let him go on his own and he had good location on his pitches."

Darius Banks, the starter for Forrest City was charged with the loss. He pitched into the third inning and allowed 10 of the 19 runs which the International All-Stars scored in the game.
