Arkansas Concrete playing in World Series

The Arkansas Concrete 11-year old traveling team is representing eastern Arkansas at the American Youth Baseball Association's 11-year old World Series in St. Louis this week.

Arkansas Concrete, which is made up of boys from the Forrest City, Wynne and Marianna area, will play a minimum of seven games in a drop down format tournament. Pool play began Monday and Arkansas Concrete went 1-3 in pool-style play action Monday and Tuesday. In the second pool, Arkansas Concrete was 1-1 through Wednesday.

Ceremonies for the AAYBA World Series will be held at Busch Stadium prior to a game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

Arkansas Concrete is a community supported team and is one of 40 teams competing in the 11-year old division.


Second place team

The Forrest City Lucas Trucking 10-year old traveling team recently finished second at the 2002 Mustang Round-Up Tournament played in Marion. Team members are: Bruce Heard, Lance Hughes, Nathan Derrick, Tate Roberts, Josh Davis, John Jones, Louis Driver, Sharderio Logan, Jim Bailey, Theodis Goodwin, Henry Henderson, Darius Banks, Josh Taylor and Derrick Buchanan. The teams coaches are:, Jim Bailey, Larry Derrick and Steve Roberts.


Hall of Fame to add nine on Sept. 20

The Forrest City Athletic Hall of Fame will add nine new members during its third annual induction ceremonies set for Sept. 20.

The nine new members -- representing Lincoln High School and Forrest City High School before 1970 and after 1970 -- will join the 24 present Hall of Fame members.

The 2003 class is:

*Eugene Rooks, Wallace Purifoy and Maxine Kennedy Douglas, representing Lincoln.

*Ray Trail, Richard Trail and Jim Finch, representing FCHS prior to 1970

*Harvey Hampton, Stan Winfrey and Carter Ray Campbell, representing FCHS after 1970.

The 2003 class will be inducted during a banquet set for Friday, Sept. 20, at the Forrest City Country Club.

The nine new members will be introduced during halftime ceremonies of the Forrest City-Osceola football game at Sam Smith Stadium.

The previous inductees into the Hall of Fame include DeJustice Coleman, Manuel and Cecil Twillie, Robert Harris, Rodney Echols, Clarence Jones Jr., Florine Bingham and John Watson, of Lincoln; Marvin Laws, James Devazier, Donnie Kessinger, Elmer "B." Lindsey, Bill Kessinger, Sonny Holmes, Jim Lindsey and Pat Todd, Forrest City before 1970; and Rusty Trail, Mallory Nimocks, Robert Lee Steward, Arthur Banks, William Hampton, Dudley Parker, Jimmie Rogers and Charlotte Fields Wright, representing Forrest City High School after 1970.

The Hall of Fame members are selected from nominations submitted by the general public and then by a vote of the previous inductees.

Plaques honoring the new inductees will be placed on the Wall of Honor on the upper floor of Mustang Arena.

The Hall of Fame was started in 2000.


EACC to sponsor youth softball, soccer camps

East Arkansas Community College will hold a Youth Softball Camp, beginning Monday, July 29, at the college baseball field.

The camp will be staffed by instructors from Dulin's Sports Academy in Memphis.

The camp will conclude on Tuesday, July 30.

Cost per camper is $85 and the camp will feature two age divisions -- ages 6-8 meeting from 9 a.m. until noon both days and ages 9-12 meeting from 1 until 4 p.m.

The camp will stress the basic fundamentals of the game and will include throwing, batting, base-running and fielding drills.

*EACC will also host a Youth Soccer Camp Aug. 5-9 for ages 5-13.

Cost of the camp is $60 and will be held in two sessions from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. and from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
