Planter's Bank takes win over Freeman

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

Union Planter's Bank completed their Junior Babe Ruth season Monday with a "get-even" win over Freeman.

Earlier in the year, Freeman defeated Planter's and has held the league lead since.

Planter's used a complete game pitching performance from Ivan Gardner and three runs from Kyle Smith to take a 5-2 win over Freeman.

The victory leaves Planter's at 7-1 for the year and, for the time being, in first place.

Freeman, at 6-1, has one game remaining to be played, a make-up game against Ridout.

Freeman could end the season as co-champions with Planter's with a win over Ridout.

Gardner held Freeman to just two runs on two hits and five walks. He struck out 10 in five innings of work.

Planter's took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Smith banged out a single and scored when Bruce Carnes was issued a bases-loaded walk.

Freeman tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third but Planter's regained the lead at 3-1 with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Blake Davis and Smith each scored.

Freeman cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the fifth before Planter's closed out the win with two runs in the fifth.

*In Monday's other game, Ridout improved to 3-4 for the year with a 12-10 win over Rotary Club.

Ben Daugherty worked five innings for Ridout allowing the 10 Rotary Club runs on five hits to get the win.

Marcus Cole led Ridout by scoring four runs on three hits and a walk with two RBIs while Dion Davenport scored three times and Landan McShan scored twice.

Travis Holloway got the start for Rotary Club and also contributed two runs as did Avian Wright and Rashad Green.

Rotary led 4-0 after plating four runs in the bottom of the first. Ridout cut the lead in half with two runs in the top of the second and tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the third.

A five-run fourth put Ridout in front 9-4 before Rotary answered with five runs of their own in the home half of the inning to tie the game at 9-9.

Ridout pushed three runs home in the top of the fifth to lead 12-9 and then held Rotary to a single run in the last at-bat to get the win.

The two make-up games will be played Thursday, June 13.

First National women pick up first win of year

By FRED CONLEY

Sanyo barely escaped Boar's Head Monday, having to score six runs in the final two innings to take a 10-9 win in adult men's softball league play.

Sanyo remains unbeaten -- pending the outcome of last Thursday's game against Barnes which is currently under review -- for the year at 8-0, one game back of Barnes, a 22-13 winner over Food Giant Monday.

Barnes is 9-0 for the year.

Boar's Head led 9-1 after scoring four runs in the top of the fifth. Sanyo plated three runs in the bottom of the inning and added four runs in the bottom of the sixth to trail by one 9-8 before pushing the game-tying and game-winning runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh.

In other games played Monday, Gym 2000 defeated the Young Guns 20-7 to improve to 7-2 for the year while M&T Paving downed Kerby's 14-6 to reach 7-2.

Miller Insurance ran past a short-handed TSM Computer team, winning 20-8 while Morgan reached .500 for the season (5-5) with a win over the Bulldogs, who slip to 6-3.

*In adult women's play, First National Bank picked up their first victory of the year, a 7-6 win over Mohr Sports while Chism remained unbeaten at 9-0 with a 6-0 win over Purple Haze.

FCity drops two against Paragould

PARAGOULD -- After a solid effort on Sunday that resulted in a big win over Lonoke, Forrest City's 'A' Legion team took it on the chin Monday at Paragould, losing 13-1.

Forrest City committed eight errors in the first inning, and they never recovered in spite of out-hitting Paragould.

Forrest City led 1-0 after Charles Gaines singled and scored in the top of the first.

Paragould answered and took advantage of the miscues to score nine runs in the bottom of the first. They added two runs in the third and two runs in the fourth to end the game under the five-inning run rule.

Colby McKennon, who went the complete game against Paragould two weeks ago in a 10-6 victory at the Sports Complex, failed in his bid to repeat the effort on Monday.

The 'AAA' Forrest City team didn't fare any better, losing 14-2 to remain winless for the year.

Gaines scored his second run of the doubleheader in the top of the first inning and Logan Knight singled and scored in the fifth for Forrest City.

"I don't know what to say," said Forrest City Coach Darrell Gaskin. "The kids are playing hard, they are not quitting. They just aren't completing the play. It's just a matter of doing the little things that will get you a win."

Forrest City will travel to Jonesboro Wednesday for a scheduled A-AAA doubleheader.

The FCity 'A' team will start at 3:30 p.m., to finish a suspended game from May 28 at the Sports Complex.

FC Lion's Club shocks Devazier Brothers 16-5

By FRED CONLEY

The Lion's Club dealt Devazier Brothers a shocking blow Monday in Minor League play, taking a 16-5 win.

Devazier, who has been chasing league-leading T&J Properties since the start of the season, slips to 8-3 with three games left to play in regular season.

T&J leads the league at 10-0 and has four games left to play. A T&J win over Easley Law tonight would give the team no less than a share of the league championship.

In Monday's other game, M&T Paving dropped Joey's 8-7.

The loss leaves Joey's at 7-4 for the year. Joey's took a forfeit win over Easley Law Saturday morning, rather than taking a loss, as reported in Monday's Times-Herald.

M&T led 4-0 before Joey's got on the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the third.

Michael Ludwig homered twice for Joey's while Draylon Willis homered for M&T Paving.

Lion's Club opened with five runs in the first inning and never looked back, plating three in the second to build an 8-0 lead before Devazier scored twice in the bottom of the second.

Lion's added three runs in the fourth and two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.

L&L Electric stays on course with 11-1 win over Bonanza

By FRED CONLEY

L&L Electric stayed on course Monday in Bambino (11-12) League play but Pearson Insurance and Cochran Auto continued to keep the pressure on the league leaders.

L&L rolled up Bonanza 11-1 while Pearson got past Vaccaro 7-2 and Cochran downed Taco Bell 9-3.

Pearson (8-2) and L&L will play on June 20.

Taylor Glass stayed hot by picking up their third straight victory, a 12-11 win over Ray Houser.

Pearson got five strong innings from Chance Pearson who held Vaccaro to just three hits and one walk while striking out eight in the 7-2 win.

Vaccaro got single runs from Jared Northcutt and Taylor Chism in the first to take a 2-0 lead.

Pearson answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead and added four runs in the fifth.

Mark Machen and Alan Triggs led Pearson with two runs each. Chad Doyle pitched the final inning to close out the win.

Dale Boyd went the distance for Vaccaro striking out 11 through five innings.

Taylor Glass used three runs from Joe DeWitt, two of those home runs, Donnie Willis and Trenton Ware in the team's 12-11 win over Houser (1-9).

Ware homered in the second inning.

L&L got two runs each from Findley Scott Laws, Barrett Beshears and Tyrice Bradley in the 11-1 win over Bonanza to improve to 9-1 for the year.

Cochran Auto (7-3) scored four times in the first and second innings to roll up Taco Bell (5-5).

Each of the teams have four games remaining.
