Baseball, softball games are rained out

By FRED CONLEY

Heavy rains accompanied by high winds swept away Thursday's schedule of youth baseball games and adult softball games.

Affected by the storm which moved through the Forrest City area about 6:30 p.m., were all of the adult men and women's softball games as well as the Bambino, Junior Babe Ruth and Minor Leagues.

Program Director Kenneth Taylor said he hopes to be able to make up the games next Wednesday (June 19).

The Junior Babe Ruth League was trying to put a cap on their season Thursday by playing a pair of games rained out on May 8.

There remains a possibility that besides playing the final two games next Wednesday, the league may have to schedule a one-game playoff to decide the outright league champions.

Union Planter's Bank finished their season Monday at 7-1. Freeman is 6-1 and has one game left to play. A Freeman win would force a tie for first place and a one-game playoff. Freeman was scheduled to play Ridout Thursday.

The 13, 14 and 15-year-old District 7 tournaments are set to begin on July 5.

With a much better forecast in the offering, tonight's round of softball and baseball games should be played.

The T-Ball League will play its final regular season games tonight.

The league will begin a postseason tournament next Friday at the Sports Complex.

Other leagues playing tonight include Minor, Junior Bambino and all youth girls' softball leagues -- slow pitch and fast pitch.

Tonight's schedule begin at 6 p.m.

If you haven't yet signed up for the Forrest City Mustang or Lady Mustang basketball camps, there is still plenty of time to do so.

The camps are for elementary and junior high school students and the first of the two camps is scheduled to begin Monday, June 17.

The junior high Mustang-Lady Mustang camp for those male and female students going into the seventh, eighth or ninth grades, will be held June 17, 18 and 19, at Mustang Arena.

Cost per camper is $20 and the camp is limited to the first 50 boys and girls to register.

The girls will attend from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., each day while the boys will attend from 12 noon until 3 p.m., each day. Registration deadline is June 10.

The elementary school Mustang/Lady Mustang camp for boys and girls who will be entering the fourth, fifth and sixth grades, will be held July 8, 9, 10, 11 at Mustang Arena.

Cost per camper is $20 and the camp is limited to the first 50 boys and girls who register.

The girls will attend from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. each day while the boys will attend from 12 noon until 3 p.m. each day.

Forms for each camp may be obtained from and returned to Forrest City Coaches Sue Jayroe or Dwight Lofton.

"We have had just a handful sign up and we are way below the numbers we want to have," Jayroe said. "Regardless, we will have the camp."

FCA Camp

Mustang Arena hosted the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sports Camp this week, which offered daily sessions for boys and girls from fifth through ninth grade. The campers participated in a variety of sports and modified sporting events.

The morning session for the fifth, sixth and seventh graders attracted about 40 campers while the afternoon session for the eighth and ninth grade students attracted about 30, including several from the West Memphis area.

The camp was staffed by area athletes which include former Wynne basketball player Marlon Banks and several Forrest City coaches.
