10-under girls' league still jumbled at the top

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

With five playing dates left on the 10-under girls' slow pitch softball schedule, the league is still jumbled at the top of the standings.

The big three -- Dr. Schwartz, Food Giant and True Value -- each won again Tuesday and each stand at 11-2 for the year -- locked in a three-way tie for first place.

Schwartz put down Forrest City Bank 9-2, Food Giant held off Walker Insurance 15-12 and True Value edged Steven's 10-9.

In other league games, Sanyo downed McDonald's 8-2 and Title Company won for the third straight time, putting away Southern Furniture 10-6.

Kim Shafer, Tanesha Parchman and Raven Harrell each scored three runs to lead Food Giant in the win over Walker.

Nell Bogard supplied most of the Walker offense, scoring three runs. Kelsey Morris, Minami Miyashita and Lakeria Lucas added two runs each.

Walker fell behind 5-0 after one inning but plated three runs in the second inning to get within 5-3 before Food Giant scored their five-run limit in the home half of the inning for a 10-3 cushion.

Walker got five in the top of the third to cut the lead to 10-8.

Food Giant will open play in the 10-under district tournament Friday night at 7 p.m., when they take on Marion's Dixie Chicks at West Memphis.

Schwartz got runs from Samantha Casey, Andrea Hall, Arkalia Barber, Cara McCollum, Lauren Knight, Brittney Kidd and Katie Barnes in the win over Forrest City Bank.

FCBank got single runs from Emily Goodson and Kemlee Myers.

True Value got runs from Cassie Holloway, Sharicka Jones, LaQuisha Moore and Miranda Neely in the win over Steven's who was led by Kaitlyn Peterson, Kanesha Hughes, Kelsey Ferguson, Denton Trail and Kayla Burns.

Southern Furniture couldn't hold a 6-1 lead Tuesday, falling to Title Company, who scored four runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to post the win.

Jada Haymer, Adrienne Neal, Janelle Crawford, Tatyana Ursery, Nakia Mason and Shanice Robinson scored single runs for Southern while Rachel Morphis scored three times to lead Title Company and Paige Owens and Katie Davis scored twice. Katy Gatling, Ashley Steward and Shelby Clark scored single runs.

Sanyo got three runs from Ahsaki Ivory and two runs from Amber Jones in their win over McDonald's.

Gadberry's stays hot in T-Ball tournament

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

Even though Gadberry's is in the loser's bracket of the postseason T-Ball Tournament being played this week at the Sports Complex, they just may be the hottest team on the field right now.

Gadberry's lost their opening game of the tournament last Friday to First National Bank but returned Monday to put down H&H. Tuesday, Gadberry's won twice, defeating Sonic 22-7 and defeating Farm Bureau 27-19.

Next up for the Gadberry's team is National Carpet One on Thursday. National Carpet lost to Giffin's Tuesday, 22-16 in the winner's quarterfinals.

A year ago, Giffin's lost their first round game of the tournament and then won seven straight games to win the tournament title.

In Tuesday's other quarterfinal matchup, Dr. Cartillar reached Thursday's semifinals by holding off Perkins Premolars 15-14.

Cartillar and Giffins will play Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner advances to Friday night's championship game.

In other loser's bracket games played Tuesday, Farm Bureau eliminated M&T Paving 17-6 before being ousted by Gadberry's.

First National Bank dropped Parker 17-11 before losing to Long Real Estate 16-11. Long also defeated edwin houston 23-15.

Thursday night match-ups have Long Real Estate taking on Perkins at 6 p.m. and Gadberry's going against National Carpet One at 6 p.m.

Those two winners will play a second game Thursday at 8 p.m.

The postseason tournament is the only time during the season that the T-Ball League teams keep score.

Lucas takes another step toward league title

By FRED CONLEY

With just two regular season games left to play, Lucas Trucking needs to win only one of the two to clinch the outright Junior Bambino League title.

Lucas is 13-1 after Tuesday's 15-2 win over Mr. T Auto.

Sanyo, a 19-3 winner Tuesday over Farm Credit, is 10-3 with three games remaining and an outside shot at grabbing a share of the league title, if they can win out and hope that Lucas loses twice.

That would leave both teams at 13-3 for the year.

And Sanyo has the opportunity to help its own cause when they take on Lucas Friday night at 7:15 p.m.

Lucas won the first meeting between the two teams.

Beyond Saturday, Sanyo has Food Giant and Title Company remaining while Lucas has only Hill Concrete.

Regardless of the outcome of Friday's game, it appears Sanyo will finish no lower than second in the final standings.

The VIPs, who had an off night Tuesday, and Mr. T are tied at 8-5.

In other games played Tuesday, Hill defeated A&C Motors 17-6 while Food Giant was awarded a forfeit win over Title Company.
