District tourney action begins

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

Let the postseason games begin.

The 10 and 12-year-old District 7 Tournaments open play today. Each involves all-star teams from Forrest City, Marion, Wynne, Pine Bluff, West Memphis, Clarendon and West Helena.

The Forrest City 10-year-old All-Stars, coached by Jim Bailey and Steve Roberts, will face Marion today at 1 p.m., at Pine Bluff.

The two teams have seen each other once before this year.

"We beat them last Saturday over at Marion," Roberts said. "but they are a very salty little team and today's game will be a lot different."

Daries Banks, a hard-throwing side-armer, is expected to get the start on the mound for the 10-year-old team.

"Daries throws harder and actually has better control side-arm than he does coming over the top," Roberts said.

Win or lose, the 10s will return to action on Friday.

A win over Marion brings the team back at 6 p.m. Friday against either Wynne or Pine Bluff Seabrook. A loss puts the team back on the field at 1 p.m., Friday against the same two choices.

Meanwhile, the Forrest City 12-year-old All-Star team opens play today at West Memphis, when they take on the host team tonight at 8 p.m.

A win brings the 12's back Friday at 8 p.m., against either Clarendon or Pine Bluff International.

A loss brings the team back at 3 p.m., Friday.

Forrest City had three run leads going into the seventh inning of both American Legion games Wednesday against Stuttgart.

The A team got their third victory of the year Wednesday, holding off Stuttgart 10-9 in the nightcap of a doubleheader played at the Sports Complex.

Stuttgart led 4-2 after three innings before Forrest City began to creep back, scoring a single run in the fourth to cut Stuttgart's lead to 4-3 and then plating two runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

Stuttgart got two in the sixth for a 6-5 lead but Forrest City scored four in the bottom part of the inning to lead 9-6.

Stuttgart tied the game at 9-9 with three runs in the top of the seventh and Forrest City's Devin McLaurin singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh and scored the game-winning run on Daniel Parten's one-out sacrifice fly after McLaurin stole second and third base.

McLaurin accounted for three of Forrest City's 10 runs while Logan Knight scored twice.

Dustin Gore went seven innings for Forrest City giving way to Danny Flowers in the top of the seventh, with two on and nobody out to get the final three outs of the inning.

In the AAA game, Stuttgart scored five runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 6-3 Forrest City lead to take a come-from-behind 8-6 win.

Colby McKennon scored twice to lead Forrest City and combined with Jesse Whittemore for the pitching duties.
