Richard King

Mr. Richard King, a native of Forrest City and former leader of the regional office of the United Negro College Fund in Chicago, died recently at the family home in Las Vegas, at the age of 69.

Mr. King was born in Forrest City, and was a graduate of Philander Smith College. After moving to Chicago, he worked as an examiner for the Illinois Department of Insurance and as a property and insurance consultant with the Cook County Department of Public Aid. He joined the UNCF and worked with it for 24 years, retiring in 1994.

Mr. King was also a trustee of Philander Smith College, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and was a founding member of a social group called the Chicago Rat Pack.

Survivors include his mother, Emma Ballou and a daughter, Lori King. A memorial service was held Jan. 26.


Shirley Fay Lucy

Ms. Shirley Fay Lucy, formerly of Lee County, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 in Anderson, Mo. She was 58.

Ms. Lucy was born Feb. 16, 1943, to Bennie and Modine Ballard, was a factory worker and Pentecostal.

Survivors include her mother, of Palestine; a son, John Barnes of Marianna; a daughter, Phyllis Bageant of Marianna; four brothers, Bud Ballard and Luther Ballard, both of Ash Flat, Bill Ballard of Monroe County and Thomas Ballard of Palestine; four sisters, Joyce Hart and Jeanette Hendrix of Palestine; Patricia Wilson of Lonoke and Toni Durham of Alabama and four grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Monday, March 4, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Central Cemetery in Lexa, with Rev. Ivan Fletcher officiating. Morgan Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.


Arthur Scott Montgomery

Mr. Arthur Scott Montgomery, aged 37, of Tucson, Ariz., died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 in Tucson.

Mr. Montgomery was born Dec. 15, 1964, in Marianna, the son of Arthur Murrell Montgomery and Thelma Hardin. He had lived in Tucson the past 15 years and was a carpenter.

Mr. Montgomery is survived by a daughter, Amber Montgomery; a son, Arthur Scott Montgomery Jr.; his father, of Conway; his mother, of Maumelle; three sisters, Twila Barnes of Tucson, Tawana Fox of Maumelle and Amy Geiber of Little Rock and a brother, Frank Montgomery of Colorado.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at 2 p.m., at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Marianna Memorial Park Cemetery in Marianna, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.


Paul William Whiting

Mr. Paul William Whiting, aged 80, of Forrest City, died Sunday, March 3, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Whiting was born Oct.. 31, 1921, in Lake City, the son of Kenneth and Bertha Louise Whiting, He had lived in Forrest City the past 50 years and was a farmer and representative for Allied Chemical Co.. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the First United Methodist Church, a Rotary Club member and was a past president of the Forrest City Country Club.

In 1941 he married Helen Sims, who survives him, along with three daughters, Ellen W. Alderson of Forrest City, Paula W. Carter of Memphis and Christy W. Cranor of Russelville. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Stevens Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held graveside at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at the Hunter Cemetery in Hunter, with the Rev. Rex Darling officiating. The funeral procession will leave from Stevens Funeral home at 12 noon Wednesday. The family requests that memorials be made to the Forrest City Public Library or to the First United Methodist Church. Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
