Gus New

Mr. Gus New, 86, of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, May 9 at Davis Life Care in Pine Bluff. He was born Jan. 20, 1916 in Moro, the son of Walter Naylor new and Clara Maria Hobbs New.

He was raised in Forrest City, and moved to Des Arc in 1928. In 1941 he entered the U.S. Army and served in Alaska during World War II. In 1946, he moved to Pine Bluff, and began working at the Pine Bluff Arsonal. He retired in 1972. He also worked part time for the Pine Bluff Commercial.

He was a member of AARP, the National Retired Civil Service Workers Union, and was an International Bible Student.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ruby Wood; and two brothers, Jay New and Homer New.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie Webb New; two daughters, Patricia Slaughter of Pine Bluff and Marilyn Shepherd of Olive Branch, Miss.; a sister, Irma Montague of Benton; five grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. New were held Monday, May 13 in Graceland Cemetery, with Dr. David Harris officiating, under the direction of Ralph Robinson and Son Funeral Directors of Pine Bluff.
