CABOT -- The Cabot Panthers locked up the East's third seed into the Class AAAAA State Tournament Tuesday by sweeping Forrest City in high school baseball action at Cabot.

Cabot won the first game of the varsity doubleheader 9-2 and then took the nightcap in five innings, winning 11-0.

The Panthers needed the sweep for third after splitting a Monday doubleheader against Jonesboro.

Sylvan Hills won the AAAAA-East Conference title while West Memphis finished second.

The Class AAAAA State Tournament will be played May 4-9, at Burns Park and Lakewood in North Little Rock.

By finishing third, Cabot will face the second seeded team from the AAAAA-Central, saturday at 2:30 p.m., at Burns Park.

The Mustangs scored twice in the top of the seventh inning in the first game, when Justin McKissick and Marcus Hancock got on base.

Cabot scored four runs in the second and third innings and added a single run in the fourth off a pair of Forrest City pitchers, Brad Taylor, the starter and Cassidy Hankins.

In the second game, Cabot pitching held the Mustangs to just one hit, a single by Devin McLaurin in the bottom of the fourth. The Mustangs had only two other base runners in the game.

Cabot used a six-run, fourth inning to effectively end the game under the 10 run after five innings rule. Hancock started the second game for the Mustangs.

Forrest City ends the season at 4-17 overall and 0-14 in the conference. Two of the conference losses were forfeits to Jacksonville, when the original doubleheader was rained out and the two teams couldn't reschedule.

Lady Mustangs second at conference golf championships

CABOT -- Most of the AAAAA-East schools were missing in action Tuesday at the girls' conference golf championships played at Cabot's Greystone Country Club.

Forrest City, the defending conference champs, were on the course along with Cabot and Jonesboro.

That was it.

West Memphis, Jacksonville, LR Mills, Sylvan Hills and Blytheville -- for whatever reasons -- did not send a team.

Looking to repeat as conference champs, the Lady Mustangs watched their bid to do so fade as Cabot's Lady Panthers used a round of 89 by Chelsea Styron to post an overall team score of 202 to win the league title.

Forrest City finished second. Senior Sarah Eldridge did not have her best day for the Lady Mustangs, shooting a round of 104.

"Sarah just didn't have a good day," said Forrest City Coach Tommy Wheetley. "Her putts weren't falling and her tee shots just weren't there. That is probably the worst round she has had since her freshman season."

A year ago, on the same Greystone course, Eldridge shot an 89 -- 15 strokes better than Tuesday.

Sophomore Hannah Cohn bettered her score from last year by 19 strokes, finishing with a 129. Mary Dudley Hodges finished with a 143 as Forrest City shot a team round of 233.

Jonesboro was third with a team score of 306.

All members of three teams qualified for the upcoming Class AAAAA State Championship, which will be played on Tuesday, May 7, on the same Cabot course.

"Right now, you have to think that El Dorado would be a favorite going in," Wheetley said.

A year ago, Forrest City finished fifth in the state tournament, the school's best-ever finish, with Eldridge landing in the top 10 individually.

El Dorado returns senior Amanda McCurdy, who won the individual championship a year ago with an even-par 72.

Fayetteville won the team competition with Russellville finishing second.
