The Forrest City 'A' American Legion team will get another chance at picking up a win today, after dropping their Sunday opening doubleheader to Lonoke, while the 'AAA' team sees action for the first time.

Forrest City will entertain Newport today for an A-AAA doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.

Lonoke defeated Forrest City 'A' 12-2 and 11-8 on Sunday.

Today is the opener for the 'AAA' team _ although fans in the stands won't see much difference in the two squads.

With only three 18-year-olds on the roster -- Marcus Hancock, Adam Roberts and Sean Northcutt.

Everyone else is eligible to play on both squads.

"There won't be much change in the two teams," said Forrest City Coach Darrell Gaskin. "The line up will be virtually the same."

After today, Forrest City has home games scheduled for Wednesday and Friday.

"We're going to get a lot of playing time in very quickly," Gaskin said. "We have some players who came in late and who are still working their way into shape and we have a good core of young kids on the roster."

Gaskin is carrying 28 players combined for the A and AAA squads this season.

There is very little room to maneuver at the top of the Bambino (11-12) League.

Following Monday night's round of games at the Sports Complex, three of the league's eight teams find themselves locked in a tie for first place.

Pearson Insurance, L&L Electric and Taco Bell are all 4-1.

Monday night, Pearson ran all over Taylor Glass 27-14 while Taco Bell cruised past Bonanza 12-2.

Cochran Auto won for the third straight time Monday, handing L&L its first loss of the year using a 4-2 win.

Cochran, last year's league champ, opened with back-to-back losses but appear to be back on track.

Cochran plated two runs in the top of the first inning and L&L got one in the home portion to trail 2-1.

Cochran added single runs in the third and fifth by Randy Crawford and Edgar Morris while L&L got a run in the fifth.

L&L managed just four base runners in the second, third and fourth innings. Chaunceney Boles and Barrett Beshears scored for L&L.

Meanwhile, Taco Bell scored seven times in the bottom of the first inning and added four runs in the third for a big win over Bonanza.

Bonanza plated single runs in the first and fourth innings.

Tyler McCluskey and Jacob Shafer each scored for Bonanza.

Seth Smith worked the complete game for Taco Bell, allowing the two runs on three hits.

Pearson Insurance opened a 7-0 lead over Taylor Glass and then sent 17 batters to the plate in the second inning to score 13 runs in the team's big 27-14 win over Taylor.

Chad Doyle homered for Pearson while Chance Pearson crossed the plate five times and Desmondd Pigue added four runs. Quinn Powell, Mark Machen, Alan Triggs, Doyle and KeMario Tucker scored three runs each.

Marquez Powell homered for Taylor and scored three runs. Markese Ware added three runs.

Finally, Vaccaro Lumber broke through for its first win of the year, a 14-13 victory over Ray Houser.

Houser led 13-11 after five innings but failed to score in the top of the sixth.

That gave Vaccaro the chance to score three times in their final at bat in the bottom of the inning to win the game.

Nakieer Barton led Houser by scoring three times while Jared Northcutt and Dale Boyd each scored four runs to lead Vaccaro.

Gym 2000 and Kerby's are tied for third while M&T is fourth and the Young Guns are fifth.

Gym 2000 defeated Miller Insurance 27-24 Monday while the Young Guns held off Greg's 20-10.

Boar's Head rolled up Morgan 22-12.

TSM and Morgan remain the only two teams in the league without a season victory so far.

Monday, Chism put down Purple Haze 7-2 while Mohr Sports ran their season mark to 2-2 with a 6-1 win over First National Bank.

Mohr led 2-0 after one inning and pushed that lead to 4-0 before First National scored a lone run in the top of the sixth inning.

Chism actually trailed Purple Haze 1-0 before tying the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth and then using a three-run fifth and a three-run sixth inning to nail down the win.

Razorback Rally is Wednesday

Buddy Billingsley would like to see all of the tickets for the upcoming Razorback Rally, sold in advance of the annual event.

The rally will be held Wednesday (May 22) at the Forrest City Civic Center and is once again sponsored by the East Central Arkansas Razorback Club.

"There will be tickets available at the door, but I would sure like to see all of the sold in advance," Billingsley said recently. "That way we know how many people we need to prepare for."

Tickets are available now from several local merchants or from Billingsley by calling 633-4941. But for those who are planning to come to the rally and can't get tickets in advance, they will be available at the door.

The tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids ages 12 and under.

Arkansas Razorback Basketball Coach Stan Heath will be the featured speaker and Chuck Dicus will also be at the rally.

The third annual Harold Horton Award will once again be announced at this year's Rally.

Last year the award was presented to Rod Stinson and in 2000, the award was given to Anthony Lucas.

The Horton Award is given to the one Arkansas student-athlete who best serves the community during his UA career.

Don and Ellen Edmondson of Forrest City initiated the award through the Razorback Foundation in recognition of Horton's career as an Arkansas player, coach, recruiting coordinator and administrator.

The rally will begin at 6 p.m., with a social hour and a catered dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

A silent and a live auction will be held and several door prizes will be given away.
