Forrest City American Legion Coach Darrell Gaskin will have nightmares about Tuesday's 'A' game for a long time.
Leading Newport 20-3, after three innings, Forrest City's pitching went south as Newport walked their way to a huge 28-22 come-back win. The game lasted four hours and five minutes.
"In the first two innings we played as well as we could play," Gaskin said. "We hit the ball and made the plays in the field and we were feeling good about our effort, coming off Sunday's doubleheader loss to Lonoke."
Danny Flowers and Chris Autry had the game well in hand from the mound. When Autry got into a little trouble, Gaskin called on Colby McKennon in the top of the third inning and McKennon responded by getting Forrest City out of the inning.
Gaskin sent McKennon back out in the fourth and began to substitute freely, with the intention of giving everyone a chance to play.
"I didn't want to run up the score on them (Newport)," Gaskin said. "Nobody wants to play that game."
McKennon ran into trouble giving way to Logan Knight, followed by Broderick Gray, followed by Adam Kennedy and finally Cassidy Hankins.
Meanwhile, Newport scored five in the fourth to cut Forrest City's lead to 20-8 and then put together a 13-run, fifth inning to take a 21-20 lead.
Forrest City answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 21-21.
Newport plated seven runs in the top of the seventh to lead 28-21 and Forrest City got just one run in their final at-bat to set the final.
For the game, Newport took advantage of 27 walks and banged out nine hits to get the win.
The Forrest City 'A' squad falls to 0-3 for the year.
"I learned a valuable lesson, today," Gaskin said.
In the first outing for the AAA Forrest City squad, Newport used solid pitching to take home a 17-4 win.
Newport led 5-0 before Forrest City came to bat in the bottom of the first inning and 6-0 before scoring three times in the second.
Flowers, Robert Hill and Clyde Kennedy banged out consecutive base hits in the inning and came around to score.
Newport went on to add four runs in the third and seven in the fourth to end the game under the five-inning run rule.
Flowers went the distance for Forrest City, giving up all 17 runs on 12 hits.
Forrest City scored four runs on seven hits and left three runners stranded. Dustin Gore scored Forrest City's final run in the bottom of the third when he singled and came around on an RBI double by Flowers.
Forrest City jumps back into action today when they host Greenbrier for an 'A-AAA' doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
Friday's scheduled doubleheader against Batesville has been cancelled. Forrest City will host Jonesboro on Tuesday, May 29.
