L&L downs Pearson to move into first place

Tyrice Bradley and Barrett Beshears combined to hold Pearson to one run on two hits to help lead L&L Electric to a 3-1 win Thursday night in Bambino (11-12) League action.

The victory allows L&L to take over sole possession of first place in the league.

Going into Thursday's games, L&L, Pearson and Taco Bell were locked in a three-way tie for first.

Taco Bell lost Thursday to Ray Houser 9-8 to join Pearson and Cochran Auto at 4-2 and in a three-way tie for second.

Cochran easily defeated Taylor Glass 17-5 to record their fourth straight win.

Bradley started for L&L and went five innings giving way to Beshears who worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

The two pitchers combined for seven strikeouts.

Mark Machen and Chance Pearson were the only two Pearson players to collect base hits.

Machen had a single in the first inning but was left standing at third and Pearson, who had walked in the first inning, hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning.

Daniel Richards was hit by a pitch in the third inning and came around to score for L&L. The team's other two runs came from Bradley who singled and walked.

L&L managed just two hits off Pearson's Chad Doyle but took advantage of six walks.

Doyle went the distance and finished with nine strikeouts.

L&L led 1-0 after two innings and 3-0 after three.

Cochran got four runs from Justin Cochran and three runs each from Byron Gardner, Randy Crawford and Douglas Miller in their win over Taylor.

Cochran led 8-0 before Taylor scored its first run in the bottom of the third.

Donnie Willis, Tyler Davenport, Justin Nosler, Markese Ware and Trenton Ware accounted for the Taylor Glass runs.

Ray Houser got two runs from Nakieer Barton and Chris Smith in the team's 9-8 win over Taco Bell.

Taco Bell led 8-6 after four innings but Houser scored twice in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 8-8 and then used a run by Smith in the top of the sixth to win it.Ratay Ursery, James Green, Chris Barton, David Malone and Brently Washington each scored single runs for Houser.

Justin Gadberry scored twice for Taco Bell while Seth Smith, Kyle Gaines, Tevin Hughes, Mario Sims, Hunter MaMahan and Caleb Davidson added single runs.

Vaccaro got two runs each from Taylor Chism and Jared Northcutt in the team's 8-6 win over Bonanza.Vaccaro improves to 2-4 for the year.

Charles Daugherty scored twice for Bonanza while Tyler McCluskey, Leonard Banks, Timothy Clark and Lee Smith added single runs.


Sanyo slips past Young Guns, 11-10

No changes in the men's adult softball league.

Barnes and Sanyo both won Thursday night to remain in a tie for first. Both teams are 6-0 for the year.

Sanyo edged the Young Guns 11-10 while Barnes nailed Morgan 24-12.

In other games Thursday Kerby's held off Greg's Small Engine 18-11, M&T ran past TSM Computers 26-12, the Bulldogs were 20-5 winners over Food Giant and Gym 2000 took a 14-11 win over Boar's Head.

TSM and Food Giant remain the only two teams in the league without a victory.

In a correction from Monday night's scores, Morgan defeated Boar's Head 22-12.

It was originally reported that Boar's Head had won the game.

*In the women's softball league, Chism defeated Clark Appraisals 17-1 Thursday to move to 6-0 while Purple Haze downed First National Bank 8-4.


Solo home run lifts Freeman to win over Rotary Club

Freeman used a fifth-inning, solo home run to take a 6-5 win over Rotary Club Thursday night in Junior Babe Ruth league play.

The homer broke a 5-5 tie.

Rotary Club used a single run by Tim Patton to tie the game at 5-5 before Freeman ended the game with the home run.

Freeman stays unbeaten for the year at 4-0.

In Thursday's other game, Union Planter's Bank moved to 4-1 on the year with an 8-2 win over Fred's..

Freeman opened a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, using one hit, two walks and an error.

Rotary cut the lead to 3-2 with two runs in the top of the second and plated two more runs in the top of the third to lead 4-3.

Rashad Green and Jamar Isom scored in the second while Patton and Green scored in the third.

Patton scored his second run in the fifth.

Freeman tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the third and regained a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Dexter Freeman led Freeman with two runs while Dary Banks and Charles Freeman added single runs.

Planter's Bank got two runs from Cassidy Hankins Thursday in the team's 8-2 win over Fred's. Blake Davis, Kyle Smith, Ivan Gardner and Chris Haggans added single runs for Planter's Bank.

Planter's built a 5-0 lead before Fred's plated their only two runs in the bottom of the second inning when Kevin Padilla and Bud Heath used errors to get on base. Both runners worked their way around to score.


Easley Law edges past M&T Paving

Easley Law Firm held off a late rally by M&T Paving Thursday to take home a 14-13 win in Minor League action.

Easley led 14-9 after four innings.

M&T plated three runs in the top of the fifth and a single run in the top of the sixth to get within one run before leaving the tying run stranded at second base when the third out was made.

Easley improves to 3-1 for the year while M&T slips to 1-4.

In Thursday's other Minor League game, Devazier plated 11 runs in the top of the third inning on the way to a 20-17 win over Dr. Beasley.

After the big third, Devazier led 16-5. Dr. Beasley scored three times in the third to cut the lead to 16-8 and added nine runs in the fourth inning.

Beasley led 4-0 after one inning using a two-run, homer by Brodie Johnson, who scored three times, along with Kendall Lee.

Devazier, 5-1 for the year, got at least one run from every player in the lineup.


Several area youth camps are scheduled

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Athletic Camp will be held at Mustang Arena, June 10-13.

The camp is for both boys and girls in grades fifth through ninth and is limited to 100 students per session. The first session will be held from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m., for fifth, sixth and seventh-grade students. The second session will be held from 1:30 until 4:30 p.m. for eighth and ninth-grade students.

Those attending are encouraged to wear comfortable sports clothing, tennis shoes and bring a bottle of water. Students should eat before coming to camp each day.

The camp will be staffed by FCA members and college athletes.

*The Forrest City Mustang and Lady Mustang basketball camps for elementary and junior high school students return this summer.

The junior high camp for male and female students in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades, will be held June 17, 18, 19 at Mustang Arena.

Cost per camper is $20 and the camp is limited to the first 50 boys and girls to register.

The girls will attend from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., each day while the boys will attend from 12 noon until 3 p.m., each day. Registration deadline is June 10.

The elementary camp students will be held July 8, 9, 10, 11 at Mustang Arena.

This camp is for male and female students who will be entering the fourth, fifth and sixth grades.

Cost per camper is $20 and the camp is limited to the first 50 boys and girls who register.

The girls will attend from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. each day while the boys will attend from 12 noon until 3 p.m. each day.

Deadline to register is June 15. Forms for each camp may be obtained from and returned to Forrest City Coaches Sue Jayroe or Dwight Lofton.

*The Forrest City Mustang football camp will be held June 4, 5, and 6, from 8 until 11 a.m., at the Mustang Athletic Complex.

The camp is free of charge and is open to those students who will be going into the fourth, fifth and sixth grades in the fall.

No pre-registration is necessary.

*Wynne High School will hold the Yellowjacket and Lady Jacket basketball camps, June 3-6, at Yellowjacket Gym.

The camp is open to boys and girls, grades first through ninth and the cost per each camper is $45.

The girls will meet from 8 until 11:30 a.m., each day of the camp while the boys will meet from 12:30 until 4 p.m. each day.

All students may either pre-register or register on the first day of the camps.

*The first track and field meet of the summer will be held at North Little Rock High School, Saturday, June 1.

Using AAU youth age divisions and events, the meet will count toward the 2002 AAU rankings.

Entry fees are 42 for first event and $1 for each event after.

5K Walk/Run set for June 8 in Wynne

The Flat as a Pancake 5K Walk/Run will be held in Wynne, on Saturday, June 8.

The 3.1 mile course is USATF certified.

There will also be a 12-under Fun Run.

Entry fees are $10 before race day, $15 on the day of the race and $5 for the fun run.

The first 100 race entrants will receive a short-sleeve t-shirt.

The 5K will begin at 8 a.m., at the Women's Progressive Club, located across from the Wynne Post Office, 222 Merriman Ave.

Trophies will be given for overall male and female, first, second and third places; Masters Overall, male and female, first, second and third; male and female age divisions first, second and third and male and female walkers, first, second and third.

The 12-under Fun Run is limited to 25 youths.

World Series qualifier

Forrest City Arkansas Concrete finished second at the West Tennessee Invitational Tournament played recently and qualified for the USSSA 11-year-old World series to be played at Overland Park, Kansas, July 21-28.

Arkansas Concrete lost to the Memphis Travelers 5-3 and lost to the Bartlett Panthers 5-1 before defeating the Collierville Patriots 5-1 and losing to Memphis in the finals.

Arkansas Concrete team members are: Barrett Astin, Alex Andrews, Douglas Ferguson, Turner Norsworthy and Aaron Pool, Brent DeVazier, Raymond Patillo, Joey Bonds, Jacob Smith, Baker Aldridge, Seth Smith. The coaches are John Aldridge, Greg Bonds, Tommy Norsworthy and Jay Caldwell.
