Late Kerby's rally silences Young Guns

Kerby's scored eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a come-from-behind 17-13 win over the Young Guns in adult men's softball Monday night.

Trailing 11-9, Kerby's put together the seventh-inning rally using nine hits.

The victory keeps Kerby's in a four-way tie for first in the league with Sanyo, the Bulldogs and Barnes Timber. All four teams are 2-0.

Barnes rolled up Miller Insurance 24-3, the Bulldogs defeated Boar's Head 13-6 and Sanyo ripped Food Giant 17-3.

Kerby's led 3-0 before the Young Guns tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the second.

Kerby's plated four runs in the top of the third to retake a 7-3 lead.

The Young Guns returned the favor by pushing five runs across the plate in the bottom of the inning to lead 8-7.

Headed into the sixth the Young Guns led by one run, 9-8 before Kerby's tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the inning only to fall behind 11-9 in the bottom of the inning after two runs by the Young Guns.

Greg's evened its record at 1-1 Monday holding off TSM Computers 22-18.

Greg's used a 12-run seventh inning to erase a 17-10 TSM lead.

Barnes scored eight runs in the third and fifth innings to roll up Miller 24-8 while the Bulldogs scored three times in the top of the sixth inning and then held Boar's Head to a single run in the last at-bat to claim a 13-6 win.

M&T Paving held off Morgan 13-11 and a seven-run, first inning outburst by Sanyo helped put away Food Giant 17-3.

*In women's league play, last year's league champ, Chism Concrete improved to 2-0 for the year with a hard-fought 6-0 win over Clark Appraisals Monday night.

The game was scoreless until Chism scored three in the fourth and added a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Clark, 0-1, managed just six base runners for the game.

Purple Haze rebounded from last Thursday's opening season loss to take a 16-10 win over First National Bank Monday.

Purple Haze led 8-0 before FNB tied the game in the bottom of the third inning.

FNB managed just two more runs after that.


Union Planter's rolls past defending champs

Union Planter's Bank jumped all over defending Junior Babe Ruth champion Fred's Monday night, winning 14-1 in the season-opening round of league games.

Fred's, coming off a 12-0 season last year, scored its lone run in the top of the first inning when Wilson Parker doubled and scored.

It was all Union Planter's after that.

Planter's plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning, two in the second, three in the third and six in the fourth.

Cassidy Hankins and Kyle Smith each scored three runs to lead Planter's while Thomas Brown and Blake Davis scored twice.

Hankins went the distance on the mound to pick up the win, holding Fred's to the single run on three hits and three walks.

Kevin Padillo was the starter for Fred's.

Planter's took advantage of 10 walks to help put up their 14 runs.

Freeman's 11, Rotary Club 5

Freeman's opened the year with an 11-5 win over Rotary Club Monday night.

Riding four runs in the first inning, Freeman's pitcher Terrance Ware did not allow a hit or a run after the third inning.

Rotary scored three times in the first and plated single runs in the second and third innings.

Adam Moody, Travis Holloway, Tim Patton, Avian Wright and Rashad Green each scored to lead Rotary.

Green went the pitching distance for Rotary.

Ware helped his own cause with a single, a double and a home run and scoring three times while Stephon Weaver and Darry Banks added two runs each in the win.

Freeman's led 7-4 before Rotary scored their final run in the bottom of the third inning.

Freeman's plated two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth while Ware struck out seven of the final 10 Rotary batters he faced to end the game.

The league returns to action on Thursday when Ridout will take the field for the first time this season against Freeman's and Rotary will take on Fred's.

All of the Junior Babe Ruth games this season are being played on Field 8.


Win over M&T Paving leaves T&J unbeaten

T&J Properties won for the second straight time Monday to stay undefeated at 2-0 in the Minor League.

T&J used two runs each from Andre Dulaney, Barlow Herbert, Michael Wingo and Delan Parkman to roll up M&T Paving 11-1.

T&J scored seven of their 11 runs in the first inning.

Xavier Clardy scored M&T's single run.

Devazier Brothers 10, Ben's Auto 7

Devazier scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning and then held Ben's Auto to just two runs in the home half of the inning Monday to post an 11-7 win.

Devazier evens their season record at 1-1 while Ben's falls to 0-2.

Nicholas King and L. Scott Bryant scored twice for Devazier while Zane Walton, Kyler King, Harrison Devazier, Jacob Graves, Kerrie Barden and DNeshio Foster added single runs.

Ben's got three runs from A. James Aldridge and two runs each from Teven Brown and Damoni Franklin.

Dr. Beasley meets Easley Law tonight at 6 p.m., followed by Joey's taking on Forrest City Lions at 7:30 p.m.


Early three-way tie develops in Bambino

There's a three-way tie for first in the Bambino (11-12) League.

Monday night, Pearson, L&L and Bonanza all posted victories to create the early log jam. Each team is unbeaten at 2-0.

L&L got a pair of runs from Tyrice Bradley and a combined pitching effort from Daniel Richards and Barrett Beshears to hold off Vaccaro Lumber 8-6.

Vaccaro led 3-1 after one inning but L&L tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the third inning.

Pearson Insurance 9, Ray Houser 8

Pearson held off a final inning rally by Ray Houser Monday night to escape with a 9-8 win, keeping the team 2-0 for the year.

In a see-saw battle, Pearson led 3-2 after one inning and 6-3 after three innings.

Two runs in the fourth made it an 8-4 Pearson advantage and a single run in the sixth made it 9-5 before Houser plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth and left the tying run stranded at first when the third and final out was made.

Ratay Ursery scored twice for Houser as did Nakieer Barton and James Green. Green homered in the sixth.

Chad Doyle and Quinn Powell both scored twice to lead Pearson while Mark Machen, Chance Pearson, Alan Triggs and Ross Dunn added single runs.

Bonanza 10, Cochran Auto 9

In extra innings, Bonanza moved to 2-0 for the year turning back Cochran Auto 10-9.

Bonanza scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game.

Cochran tied the game at 9-9 with a single run in the top of the fourth and neither team scored after that until the eighth.

Douglas Miller scored three times for Cochran.

Bonanza got three runs from Leonard Banks and two runs each from Tyler McCluskey and Joshua Smith. Banks scored the game-winning run for Bonanza.

Taco Bell 10, Taylor Glass 9

Taco Bell pushed one across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to clip Taylor Glass 10-9.

Taylor tied the game at 9-9 with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Seth Smith tripled with one out in the bottom of the inning and scored on Justin Gadberry's game-winning single.

Smith, Gadberry, Tevin Hughes and Nehemiah Stevens each scored twice for the winners.

Joe DeWitt and Donnie Willis scored three times for Taylor.


FC girls' physicals scheduled

Physicals examinations will be given for all Forrest City female athletes in grades 7-12, on Saturday, May 18, at the offices of Dr. Curtis Patton, 901 Holiday Drive.

The exams will begin at 9 a.m. and will cost $10.

All Forrest City female students who wish to participate in any athletics for the upcoming 2002-03 school year, must obtain and complete a physical form before they will be allowed to compete.
