Mr. Knox Kinney, age 78, of Forrest City, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
Mr. Kinney was born July 22, 1924, in Memphis, the son of Kenneth Hayes Kinney and Ruby Lucille Baird Kinney. He resided in St. Francis County for all of his life, with the exception of three years of service in World War II. He attended Forrest City public schools and graduated in May, 1942, from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, Tenn.
Mr. Kinney began undergraduate studies at the Citadel in September of 1942, and then volunteered that December for service in the U.S. Army. He served for three years in the 14th Armored Division under General Patton and General Smith. He was awarded two bronze stars for his service in combat. Following his honorable discharge and service in the reserves, with the commission of Lieutenant, he went back to school and received a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the Vanderbilt Law School in 1949.
Mr. Kinney was licensed to practice law in both Arkansas and Tennessee, beginning his career at Snowden, Davis, Brown, McCloy and Donelson law firm in Memphis. He returned to Forrest City in 1950 to set up his own law practice. He was elected to the Arkansas Legislature in July of 1950, and served four terms. He retired from the legislature without opposition to meet the demands of his practice.
In addition to serving as Forrest City City Attorney for 32 years, Mr. Kinney was named Young Man of the Year by the Arkansas Jaycees in 1956 and served as president of the St. Francis County Bar Association. He was also a member of the Forrest City Rotary Club and the Forrest City Chamber of Commerce. He was a Gideon; a life member of the VFW; and served as past chairman of the Forrest City Planning Commission.
He also was a member of the Arkansas and American Bar Associations; the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association; the Association of Trail Lawyers of America, the House of Delegates of the Arkansas Bar Association and First Baptist Church.
Mr. Kinney is survived by his wife, Patsy Patrick Kinney of the home; a son, Baird Kinney of Forrest City; a daughter, June Kinney Belew of Memphis; a brother, Clarke Kinney of Little Rock; and one grandchild.
Funeral services for Mr. Kinney were held on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at First Baptist Church. Burial followed in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Stevens Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.
The family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church or to the Gideons International.
Mrs. Margurite Perry Smith, age 84, of Forrest City, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Crestpark Retirement Inn in Forrest City.
Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 5, 1918, in Water Valley, Miss, the daughter of Wattie Thomas Perry and Ester George Perry. She was a retired nursing home aide, a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Palestine.
Mrs. Smith is survived by two sons, Watty Noble Smith of Etowah, Tenn., Donald Smith of Caldwell; one daughter, Joann Gracey of Forrest City; two brothers, Aaron Perry of Palestine and Charles Perry of Tennessee; three sisters, Catherine Shipley of Forrest City, Elizabeth McCafferty of Biloxi, Miss., and Frankie Ann Perry of Marion; nine grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation services for Mrs. Smith will be held on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at 10 a.m. in the Chapel of Morgan Funeral Home with Bro. W.L. Prentiss officiating. Burial will follow in Bell Cemetery in Palestine.
Mrs. Dorothy Lee Snelson, age 68, of Colt, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Snelson, born June 24, 1934, in Memphis, was the daughter of William Woody and Liddie Davis McCoy. She was retired from General Industries and a member of the Old Time Pentecostal Church in Widener.
Mrs. Snelson is survived by her husband, Leroy Snelson of Colt; one son, Kenny Mayfield of West Memphis; two daughters, Stephanie Thomas of Crawfordsville and Amanda Deese of Marion; one brother, William "Bill" McCoy of Parkin; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Mrs. Snelson will be held Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Morgan Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hughes Cemetery with Bro. Vance Jumper officiating, assisted by Bro. Dickie Daniels and Bro. Charlie Dewitt.
Mrs. Jeanette Nepean White, age 60, of Wynne, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, at St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Mrs. White, born April 29, 1942, in DeKalb Ill., was the daughter of Roy Olson and Nora King Olson. She was a cook for 10 years at Wynwood Nursing Center in Wynne, and was employed at Warwick in Forrest City. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. White married Alvin Leon White in 1959 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2002. She is survived by one son, Bryant White of Wynne; six sisters, Dorothy West of Sycamore, Ill., Betty Marbutt and Gloria Roach of DeKalb, Ill., Ruby Long of Sherwood, Ill., Rosemary Olsen on Genoa, Ill., and Carol Simpson of Cortland, Ill; two brothers, John Nepean of Lanark Ill., and Lonnie Olsen of DeKalb Ill.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Votaw and Colleen Nepean, and a brother, Robert Nepean.
Funeral services for Mrs. White were held on Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home. Burial followed in Lewis Cemetery in Hickory Ridge.
