The numbers say 'a win' for Mustangs

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

Some of the numbers add up in Forrest City's favor, others don't.

The Mustangs, 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the AAAAA-East Conference have a very good chance to pick up their first league win of the year Friday, when they host the Blytheville Chickasaws for homecoming.

Blytheville is also 2-4 and winless in the conference.

The defensive numbers favor the Mustangs while the offensive numbers -- not so much.

Forrest City ranks fourth in the conference in points allowed -- with 113 through six games or a little more than 18 points per game.

Blytheville ranks sixth defensively, having already given up 133 points in six outings or a tad more than 22 points per game.

That is the good news for the Mustangs.

Offensively, Blytheville holds the edge but just barely.

The Chicks have scored 114 points in six games which averages to a little better than 18 points per game while the Mustangs have struggled in their first six games, scoring just 83 points or 13 points a game.

The Mustangs, in their first three conference games (Jonesboro, Searcy and Cabot) have scored just 21 points -- seven against Cabot and 14 against Searcy.

Given those statistics, the thought process concludes that the Mustangs have to score at least 21 points against Blytheville to pick up a win while continuing to get the job done on the defensive side of the football as well.

Searcy leads the East offensively, scoring 201 points in the first six games while Jonesboro continues to show its mettle on the defense, holding their first six opponents to a combined 37 points.

As of Tuesday, three of the East teams were ranked in the Associated Press Top 10 -- West Memphis at No. 7, Jonesboro at No. 9 and Cabot coming in at 10th.

West Memphis and Jonesboro will hook up on Saturday in a game that could possibly decide the conference title. Both the Blue Devils and the Hurricane are 3-0 in the league.

Friday, Jacksonville and Searcy meet in a pivotal conference game. The Red Devils are 2-1 in the league while the Lions are 1-2.

In other area games, the Palestine-Wheatley Patriots will host Turrell Friday for homecoming ceremonies while Hughes will have homecoming on Friday, Nov. 1, hosting Turrell.

Hughes is unbeaten in the 3AA Conference and shares the league lead with Marked Tree.

Hughes and Marked Tree will meet on the final playing date in a game that appears to have conference champion and state playoff seeding connotations written all over it.

The Blue Devils currently lead the 3AA offensively, having scored 221 points in six games and lead the league on defense, having allowed only 72 points through six games.

Palestine-Wheatley is 2-3 in the league and still in contention for a state playoff berth.

JBoro Lady Hurricane reach 28-0

BLYTHEVILLE -- Allison Taylor had five kills as Jonesboro cruised past Blytheville 15-5, 15-3, 15-1 in AAAAA-East conference high school volleyball Tuesday night.

Jonesboro improved to 28-0 overall and 4-0 in the league. The Lady Hurricane will face Cabot on the road Thursday night with a chance to wrap up its 14th straight regular-season title.

Courtney Boeckman was 17-of-17 serving with two aces while Allyson Seagrave went 15-of-15 with three aces and 10 assists.

*Marion knocked Nettleton out of a share of the AAAA-East conference lead by whipping the Lady Raiders 15-13, 15-11, 15-7 Tuesday night in high school volleyball at Raider Gym.

Nettleton dropped to 8-11 overall and 6-3 in the league, one loss behind both Marion and Wynne.

*The Wynne Lady Yellowjackets (16-7, 9-2 AAAA-East) slipped past Greene County Tech 11-15, 15-11, 15-6, 13-15, 15-9 in AAAA-East conference play Tuesday.

Lexi Davis had 41 digs, Autumn Campbell 13 kills and 16 digs, Jenna Gracey 10 kills and five solo blocks, Nicole Johnson six kills.

*The Forrest City Lady Mustangs played a conference match at Mountain Home Tuesday, losing the varsity match 15-5, 15-1, 15-2 and dropping the JV match 15-10, 15-6.
