Calvary Jr. Lady Eagles flyin' high

The Calvary Christian School Junior High girls' volleyball team have completed their two-year journey to the mountain top.

A year ago, the junior girls came from a last-place finish the previous year to a third-place finish.

This year, the team took the final steps -- from third to first and the Midsouth Association of Christian Schools.

On their way to the conference title, the Junior Lady Eagles did not have to play a third or deciding match this season, winning all of their games in straight sets.

The high school Lady Eagles team finished the regular season in third place.

There's not much difference in the makeup of the two teams.

The high school team has one junior member, Vanessa Myers and one senior member, Jessica Mathes.

They sit out the junior high games and play the high school games along with four freshmen, Gayatri Patel, Kriston Hogland, Meredith Borden and Brittney Nichols and four sophomores, Melissa Smith, Katie Hornbeak, Amber Hart, Katie McNair and Hannah McMahand.

Also included on the Lady Eagles roster are sixth-grade players, Stonie Weeks and Heather Baldwin.

Both teams have been under the guidance and direction of second-year coach Peggy Smith.

Both teams will begin play at the postseason Macon Road Baptist School Invitational Tournament, which starts today at Macon Road.

Calvary, the No. 1 seeded team into the junior high bracket, will play fourth-seed Faith Christian, today at 6 p.m.

The third-seeded senior Lady Eagles will play No. 2 seed Macon Road at 7 p.m.

The consolation and championship games will be played Friday, beginning at 5 p.m.

Forecast for tonight's junior high football games -- DRY!

Forrest City Blue coach Rich Trail was happy to hear that it won't be raining tonight and for the first time in three weeks, his Junior Mustangs will be playing on a dry field.

"Earlier in the week, the forecast had a chance for rain tonight," Trail said. "I almost decided to boycott the game if that had happened."

The forecast for tonight is dry with the rain holding off until the weekend.

"I hope we remember how to play on a dry field," Trail said. "We've been so used to slipping and sliding the past three Thursdays."

Trail's Blue Mustangs travel to Jonesboro tonight to take on MacArthur beginning at 7 p.m.

Forrest City is 3-2 on the year, but have dropped two of their last three games.

MacArthur, at 2-4, would appear to be almost an automatic win for the Blue Mustangs.

"Not so," Trail says. "We are probably catching MacArthur at a tough time. They have won their last two games and have some momentum going for them. We will have to be ready and focused."

Trail said a win over MacArthur and a victory over West Memphis East next week at home, should give his Blue Mustangs third place in the AAAAA-East Conference by themselves.

West Memphis West and Jonesboro Annie Camp, the two unbeaten teams in the league, and will decide the conference championship tonight at West.

"MacArthur will throw the ball a lot," Trail said. "Our pass defense this season has been okay, but we need to step up another notch tonight. We can't let this one slip past us."

The Forrest City Mustangs, 2-4 for the year, will host WMemphis East, 0-6, tonight at Sam Smith.

The White Mustangs are coming off big win over West Memphis Wonder a week ago and are playing at home for the fourth time in the last five weeks.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Palestine-Wheatley's Junior Patriots will host Parkin tonight for homecoming and the Hughes Blue Imps will host Earle at Blue Devil Field.
