Earlene Allen

Mrs. Earlene Allen, age 68, of Forrest City, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.

Mrs. Allen, born Oct. 12, 1934, in Trumann, the daughter of Earl Harris and Lennox Moore Harris. She is survived by two sons, Michael Harris and Curtis Allen, both of Forrest City; one daughter, Sharon Vandenburg of the Netherlands; one sister, Louise Bass of West Memphis; one brother, Joe Mitchell of Blytheville and three grandchildren.

Visitation services for Mrs. Allen will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Woodhouse Funeral Home. Funeral services for Mrs. Allen will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Goodwin Church of God in Christ with Elder Albert Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Casteel Cemetery.


Brenda Joyce Lewis Franklin

Mrs. Brenda Joyce Lewis Franklin, age 57, of West Memphis, died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.

Mrs. Franklin was a survey nurse for the Department of Human Services and a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Bill Franklin of West Memphis; one daughter, Julie Ingram of Brighton, Tenn.; two step-daughters, Carmen Wheeler of Southaven, Miss. and Jenai Franklin of Arlington, Texas; one son, Bernie Lewis of Memphis; one step-son, Brock Franklin of Southaven, Miss.; two sisters, Zelma Smith and Thelma Woods both of Forrest City; two brothers, Fred Bowman of Eugene, Ore., and W.D. Bowman of Boise, Idaho, and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both her parents, Floyd E. and Oma F. Bowman and a brother, T.A. Bowman.

Funeral services for Mrs. Franklin will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2003, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in West Memphis. Burial will follow in Crittenden Memorial Park in Marion.


Sarah Louise Cothern Kennedy

Mrs. Sarah Louise Cothern Kennedy, age 68, of Haynes, died Friday, April 25, 2003, in Memphis.

Mrs. Kennedy was born April 23, 1935, in Memphis, the daughter of Wilbur Cothern and Gladys Middleton Cothern. She made her home in Haynes for all of her life and was a housewife and a member of the Haynes Baptist Church.

Mrs. Kennedy married Howard P. Kennedy in 1953, and he survives her along with six sons, Danny Kennedy of Memphis, Don Kennedy of Jonesboro, Richard Kennedy and Douglas Kennedy, both of Marianna, and Darryl Kennedy and Dewayne Kennedy, both of Haynes; 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Kennedy were held on Monday, April 28, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Burial followed in Forrest Park Cemetery.


Margaret Knox Petty

Mrs. Margaret Knox Petty, age 94, of Little Rock, died Friday, April 25, 2003.

Mrs. Petty was born on Sept. 16, 1908, the daughter of Samuel L. Pettus and Martha Lilly Pettus. She was a graduate of Forrest City High School, attended Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, was associated with Arkansas College (now Lyon College) in a number of capacities for many years. She was also a member of the Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Petty is survived by a sister, Polly Jones of Forrest City; one niece and seven nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Jefferson D. Petty, four sisters and four brothers.

Graveside services for Mrs. Petty were held on Monday, April 28, 2003, at 1 p.m. in Little Rock National Cemetery with Rev. Floyd Whatley officiating. Griffin, Leggett, Healey & Roth Custom Funerals and Cremations of Little Rock was in charge of arrangements.

The family requests memorial be made to the donor's favorite charity or church.


Ocie Lee Smith

Mrs. Ocie Lee Smith, age 94, of Forrest City, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Crestpark Skilled facility.

Mrs. Smith was born Nov. 26, 1908, the daughter of Walter Roberts and Nola Roberts. She was a member of Taylor's Chapel CME Church.

Mrs. Smith married Thomas Jefferson Smith in 1929, and he preceded her in death. She is survived by three daughters, Dorothy Williams and Maxine Williams, both of Forrest City, and Claudine Smith of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Homer Roberts of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Iola Roberts of Forrest City; eight grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Smith were held on Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Lane Chapel CME Church in Forrest City. Burial followed in Casteel Cemetery. McNeal Funeral Home, Inc. of Brinkley was in charge of all arrangements.
