MARION -- The Forrest City Junior Mustangs were handed a large dose of reality Monday at the Patriot Relays held at Marion.
The reality check came in the guise of West Helena -- who literally ran away from the rest of the field using an outstanding performance by all-around athlete Lance Young, who scored 40 points to take home high point honors. The Cougars finished with well over a 100 points.
Following the mile run, the Junior Mustangs were in third. They gained some ground in the final five events to finish second behind West Helena.
The FCity junior boys have two first-place finishes and a second in three meets so far this year. The Forrest City team heads to Jonesboro Thursday for the Paul Hoffman Relays.
Cory Embry won the 100-meter run with a time of 11.4 and Eric Walker won the 400-meter run finishing the event in 53.2.
Young won the 200-meter run while Embry ran second and Walker finished sixth.
In other events, Walker was fourth in the long jump while Richard Flenory took sixth in the shot and fourth in the discus. Otha Hall was fifth in the discus.
Andre Stevens finished fourth in the mile run and the Forrest City two-mile relay team of Jamar Isom, Nicko Walker, Stevens and Cordero Brown ran fifth.
Walker, Embry, Kenneth Jordan and Chris Barrett ran third in the 400-meter relay.
"Second isn't bad," said Forrest City Coach Rich Trail. "There were some good junior high teams there. It was a good meet as we head to Jonesboro."
The Forrest City senior Mustangs climbed from 10th place -- midway through the event schedule -- to finish fourth behind Marion, Jonesboro and Rivercrest Monday at Marion.
The senior Mustangs did not record any first place finishes but did have some thirds.
Daniel Echols ran third in both the 100 and 200-meter events while Ricky Beard was third in the two-mile run.
Justin Jones ran fourth in the 300-hurdles and Kerry Perkins finished sixth in the 400-meter run.
The Forrest City two-mile relay team of Beard, Brian Smith, Josh Freeman and Kelton Hamlin ran third in 9:11.92 behind Jonesboro and West Memphis.
Jones, Hamlin, Smith and Porkins teamed up to run third in the mile relay.
Perkins took part in the long jump but did not place with a best effort of 17 feet 11 inches. Palestine-Wheatley's Antonio Leak had an effort of 17 feet nine inches while Justin Tomlin leaped 19 feet three inches.

HAZEN -- The Palestine-Wheatley Lady Patriots took a whipping Monday at the hands of Hazen.
Managing just seven hits, the Lady Patriots committed eight errors and lost to the Lady Hornets 19-9 in five innings in a conference matchup at Hazen.
The loss ended a six-game win streak by the Lady Patriots.
"We weren't ready to play," said Lady Patriot Coach Lanny Allen. "We didn't get to play last Friday when Clarendon called and forfeited a doubleheader to us so being off a while didn't help."
While Hazen had just 11 hits off P-W starter Libby Martin, the Lady Patriot fielding errors helped the Lady Hornets.
Both teams were locked in a 3-3 tie after one inning and the Lady Patriots took a 6-3 lead with three runs in the top of the second. Hazen answered with a six-run second inning to lead 9-6 and then held P-W scoreless in the top of the third to set the stage for three more runs in the home half of the inning to push their lead to 12-6.
The Lady Patriots plated two runs in the top of the fourth but gave up four runs in the bottom part of the inning to fall behind 16-8. Hazen finished the deal with a three-run fifth inning.
Palestine-Wheatley falls to 8-2 overall for the year and has one game remaining -- Wednesday at Gillett.
Jenny Loewer led P-W by scoring three runs and was perfect at the plate with a 3-for-3 afternoon. Fallon Parker went 2-for-4 and scored twice while Martin added two runs. Kara Siler and Lauren Dover rounded out the scoring as each crossed the plate once.
"We left too many runners on base," Allen said. "We just got beat. That's all you can say."
* The Forrest City Lady Mustangs took it on the chin Monday, losing to Jonesboro 15-8 in AAAAA-East Conference action at Southside Park.
The Lady Mustangs led 7-3 going into the fourth inning of the varsity game.
Jonesboro plated four runs in the inning to tie the game at 7-7 and then added six runs on six hits in the fifth inning to take a 13-7 lead.
Forrest City plated a single run in the sixth while Jonesboro added two in their half of the inning.
Kanetra Pendleton scored three of Forrest City's eight runs while Jennifer Ballard added two and Alicia Kennedy, Amanda Renigar and Stacey Gracey scored one run each.
In the junior varsity game, Forrest City returned the favor by taking an 11-7 victory.
Chasity Lowe, Shari Agnew and Holly Simon each scored twice to lead the offensive effort while Risondra Deans, Staphania Woods, Amberly Elkins, Gracey and Leigh Anna Taylor scored single runs.
Taylor pitched the JV game for the win.
The Lady Mustangs slip to 7-19 overall for the year and 2-10 in the league.
Forrest City will have a couple of days off before hosting Searcy Thursday at the Sports Complex.
The Lady Mustangs have five regular season games left to be played -- three of those on the road at Cabot, Little Rock and Wynne -- and two at home against Searcy and Marion.
WYNNE -- The Forrest City Mustang golf team finished second Monday in a four-way match played at Crowley's Ridge Country Club in Wynne.
Greene County Tech won the match with a nine-hole score of 162, six strokes better than the Mustangs who posted a 168. Wynne was one stroke behind the Mustangs at 169 and West Memphis was fourth at 177.
Brian Hacker led the Mustangs with a 39 while Sawyer Ramsey, playing in the fifth spot had the second best round with a 41. Josh Coleman finished at 43, John Scott Carroll carded a 45 and Jake Wade finished at 52.
In JV action, Doug Drake shot a 56 and T.J. Drake carded a 69.
The Mustangs will play at Jonesboro today against the Hurricane and Batesville.
