Martin no-hits Lady Scarppers as Lady Patriots roll to 16-1 league win

DEVALLS BLUFF -- Palestine-Wheatley senior pitcher Libby Martin threw a five-inning, no-hitter against DeValls Bluff Tuesday in 6AA-East fast-pitch softball action.

Martin faced 18 batters through five innings and gave up just one walk while striking out eight as the Lady Patriots rolled up the Lady Scrappers 16-1.

Martin also helped her own cause by scoring three runs as did Kara Siler. Fallon Parker smacked a home run and scored two runs. Andrea Cooper, Brittney Gorden and Lauren Dover each scored twice while Beth Varvil and Natalie Halbert plated one run each.

"We haven't had batting practice in two weeks," said P-W Coach Lanny Allen. "And it shows. We have been scoring a lot of runs but we've been striking out too much."

The Lady Patriots are 4-1 overall and in the conference and they are unbeaten in the East division which includes Carlisle, Clarendon and DeValls Bluff.

The 6AA West division houses Barton, Hazen, Gillett and Des Arc.

DeValls Bluff scored their lone run off a couple of two P-W errors.

The Lady Patriots will travel to Brinkley on Thursday for a nonconference game and will host Carlisle Friday at Patriot Field.

*The Forrest City Lady Mustangs fell to 3-11 for the year losing to Brinkley 13-2 in five innings Tuesday.

Leigh Anna Taylor started for the Lady Mustangs in place of scheduled starter Stacey Gracey.

Forrest City was held to just two hits in the game.

The Lady Mustangs will travel to Mountain Home Thursday to face the Lady Bombers in conference action.

*Krystan Quinn hurled a one-hitter and struck out seven to give Wynne a 4-2 victory over Beebe and a split of their high school softball doubleheader Tuesday.

Beebe won the opener 6-2.

In the nightcap, Jenna Gracey had two hits and an RBI, while Ashley Busby also had two hits for Wynne (6-6, 3-3 AAAA-East).

*In slow-pitch softball Tuesday, the Hughes Lady Blue Devils opened the season by hosting McCrory.

With just an 11-players on roster, the Lady Devils fell to McCrory 19-1.

Shemiko Porter scored Hughes' lone run while Mandy Davidson had two hits and her sister Brandi had one hit.

Hughes will play at Marked Tree on April 7.


Mustangs win medalist title, but Blytheville takes team victory

The Forrest City Mustang golf team walked away with medalist honors but couldn't quite get the team victory Tuesday in matches against visiting Blytheville.

Sawyer Ramsey fired a 38 to take individual medalist honors but Blytheville took the team victory, winning 174-to-176 over the Mustangs.

It was the first action for the Mustangs since returning from Spring Break.

Ramsey edged Blytheville's top player, Matt Gurley by one stroke to take home medalist honors.

Gurley finished with a 39.

Brian Hacker finished with a 42 for Forrest City while Josh Coleman and John Scott Carroll recorded 48 and Jake Wade finished with a 49.

In JV play, Doug Drake fired a 57 and his brother, T.J. finished with a 75 against Blytheville's Shane Griffin, who finished with a 59.

Neither team competed in girls' matches Tuesday.

*Jonesboro won its second golf match of the season, breezing to a 34-stroke victory over West Memphis Tuesday afternoon at Meadowbrook Country Club.

With players playing nine holes with a par round of 36, Jonesboro finished with a team total of 157 while West Memphis finished at 191.

Jonesboro's Chris Woodard earned medalist honors with a round of 38 while teammates Matt Sullivan and Stephen Cox each shot 39. Willie Little was next for JHS with a 41 and Marcus Huffer shot a 43 in the play-five, count-four format.

West Memphis' Jake Para carded the low round for the Blue Devils with a score of 47.

On the girls' side, Jonesboro's Hannah Martin captured medalist honors with a round of 43 while Cassie Huffer followed with a 44. West Memphis' Candace Ratcliff finished at 58.


Darkness stops play and gives Cross County win over Blue Devils

Darkness ended Hughes' baseball game against Cross County Tuesday.

It also gave the Thunderbirds a 14-9 victory leaving the Blue Devils at 0-4.

Both teams played into the sixth inning before darkness halted play.

Eric Feperman homerd for Hughes as the Blue Devils rallied to put together a nine-run fourth inning after falling behind 14-0.

Wayne Bartosh was Hughes' starting pitcher and lasted four innings before Feperman came in to finish up.

The Blue Devils will host Bay today.


Mustang tennis season set to open next week

The Forrest City Mustang tennis team will open the season on Thursday, April 10, at Blytheville.

The team is being coached this season by Dwight Lofton.

Senior Curtis Northcutt is expected to be the team's No. 1 singles and doubles player.

Lofton will field an all-male team this season.

In other tennis matches Tuesday, Jonesboro swept a high school tennis match against Cabot, winning 4-1 in boys' play and 6-0 in girls' action.

Both Jonesboro teams are now 3-0 on the season.


Razorback Rally

Laura Mazzanti, directer of the St. Francis County Museum in Forrest City announced that an original Arkansas Traveler print by Marshall and a liminited edition print of Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville will be up for auction Wednesday, April 16, at the annual Razorback Rally, sponsored by the East Central Arkansas Razorback Club. The Rally will be held at the Forrest City Civic Center, beginning at 6 p.m.
