Mustangs fall apart against Marianna

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

MARIANNA -- Forrest City Mustang basketball coach Dwight Lofton has no explanation for what happened Saturday in a 71-46 loss to the Marianna Trojans.

"It was a total disaster," Lofton said Monday. "I did not see the same team I've been watching for the first eight games of the season. Blame it on being a Saturday game, the holidays, Marianna's pressure, whatever. . .I just don't know."

The Mustangs, 5-4, turned the ball over 35 times -- 18 in the first half -- but were still just down by six, 28-22 at the half."

"I can't explain that either," Lofton said. "It should have been worse."

It didn't take long for things to go from that to much worse in the third period. That's when the wheels came completely off for the Mustangs.

Marianna outscored the Mustangs 20-to-13 to take a 48-35 lead to start the fourth period.

The Marianna win evens the season series at 1-1. The Mustangs defeated the Trojans 68-54 in an earlier game played at Mustang Arena.

Cameron Henderson led Forrest City with 10 points. The two teams have the possibility of meeting for a third time since both will play in the upcoming Seminole Classic tournament at Osceola.

Forrest City will open play in the tournament Saturday (Dec. 27) at 2 p.m., against Hughes.

*Aaron Bowles led Cross County with 24 points and five steals but it was not enough as the Thunderbirds fell to Hughes 78-62 in senior boys basketball Friday night.

The Hughes senior girls downed Cross County 68-59.

CHERRY VALLEY -- Brooke Reddmann led Cross County with 15 points, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Thunderbirds fell to Hughes 68-59 in senior girls' basketball Friday night.

Candice Halk added 14 and Ashley Burton 11 for Cross County.
