Mrs. Katherine Devereux Morgan

Mrs. Katherine Devereux Morgan was born in New Castle, Arkansas on October 22, 1908, the daughter of Stephen Alfred Devereux and Hugh Ella Hamilton Devereux.

A lifelong resident of St. Francis County, she started teaching school at age fifteen in Round Pond and taught there for ten years. In 1933, she married Lee Small Morgan, a prominent farmer who died February 26, 1971. Mrs. Morgan was a leader in the Methodist Church, being the first women elected to the Board of the First United Methodist Church of Forrest City. Always an advocate for young people, she taught Sunday School for many years, was a Scout Leader and President of the PTA. She also represented summer camps in North Carolina. A world traveler, she would sometimes stay for months in the countries she was visiting, making friends all over the world. She was a member of the Delphian Club and P.E.O. Four years ago, she celebrated her ninetieth birthday with a seated luncheon for 140 guests.

She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Morgan Spiegel of Atlanta; grandchildren David Porterfield Adams III of Atlanta, Morgan Goodpasture Adams of Chattanooga and Devereux Adams Socas of McLean, Virginia; great-grandchildren David Porterfield Adams IV, Trevor William Adams, William Adams Socas and Garrett Stephens Socas. Her surviving brother is Arthur Louie Devereux and sisters are Elizabeth Devereux Smith and Frances Devereux Harris. She was preceded in death by brothers Hugh Stephen Devereux and Stephen Alfred Jr. and sister Louise Devereux Armstrong.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Katherine and Small Morgan Fund at the First United Methodist Church of Forrest City or the Forrest City Library.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 on Saturday at Stevens Funeral Home. The service will be Sunday, February the 23rd at 2 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church with burial at Mt. Vernon Cemetery after which friends are invited to her home.


Raevyn Meshell Hemphill

Raevyn Meshell Hemphill, age two months, of Marion, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Crittenden Memorial Hospital in West Memphis. The infant was born Dec. 10, 2002, in Forrest City, the daughter of Ryan O. Hemphill and Fredreca D. Cowan.

Raevyn is survived by both her parents of Marion; one sister, Ryanna Alexys Hemphill of Marion; six grandparents, Fred and Deloras Cowan of Palestine, Angie and Sammy Williams, and Jerome and Delois Gardner all of Forrest City; three aunts, Roshonda Brown and Katina Gillespie, both of San Diego, Calif., and LaToshia Hall of South Carolina; one uncle, Jerome Gardner Jr. of Memphis; five great-grandparents, Earnest and Mamie Fingers and Leroy and Clemmie Gardner all of Palestine, Mae Ella Cowan of Little Rock and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services for Raevyn Hemphill were held Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Elcannon M. B. Church with Elder Robert Cowan officiating. Burial followed in Elcannon Cemetery. Woodhouse Mortuary was in charge of all arrangements.
