The three remaining Forrest City All-Star teams -- the 11s, 12s and 13s -- were all eliminated from their respective state tournaments Monday.
Sheridan starting pitcher Daniel Thaxton worked his way out of two jams Monday afternoon and went on to pitch his teammates past the Forrest City All Stars in a loser's bracket game at the Cal Ripken 12-year-old state tournament at Marion.
Thaxton worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the second inning, giving up only one run, which tied the game and then got out of serious trouble in the top of the fourth when Forrest City scored twice to get within one run at 4-3.
Sheridan tacked on two more runs to produce a 6-3 final, ending Forrest City's run in the state tournament and their season.
Forrest City starter Barrett Beshears worked two innings before being replaced by Seth Smith in the bottom of the third. Smith worked two innings and Chance Pearson finished by working a scoreless fifth.
While the trio of Forrest City hurlers gave up a combined effort of six runs on just five hits and one walk, it was the defense -- or lack of defense -- that ultimately spelled the end.
Forrest City committed seven errors -- four in the fourth inning which allowed Sheridan to stretch their 4-3 lead to a 6-3 cushion. Forrest City went quietly after that, as six of the final eight batters went for outs.
Thaxton went the complete game, allowing the three runs on six hits and three walks. Sheridan's defense made just two errors.
Sheridan advances to play Little Rock Junior Deputy tonight at 6 p.m. Sheridan fell into the loser's bracket Tuesday when Hamburg took an 11-1 win in a game that was stopped Sunday night by heavy lightning. The teams finished the game Monday.
Hamburg and Sylvan Hills, the only two unbeaten teams left in the mix, played Monday night in the winner's semifinal.
Sylvan Hills knocked off Junior Deputy late Sunday afternoon.
Forrest City lost to Junior Deputy in Friday's opening game before notching loser's bracket victories over Marion and Camden.
Sheridan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning using a single, two passed balls and and RBI sacrifice ground out. Forrest City answered to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second when Mark Machen used an error to get on base and Jerome McDaniel followed with a single. Machen scored on Jacoby Cooley's RBI single to right field. Lee Smith got aboard on a fielder's choice play that forced McDaniel at second for the first out and Evan Daugherty used a fielder's choice to get on when Cooley was called out at third after getting tangled up with the Sheridan third baseman as he was making a play on the ball. Smith walked to load the bases before Findley Scott Laws grounded out to end the inning.
A walk, an error, an RBI single and a two-RBI triple helped Sheridan plate three more runs in the bottom of the second to break the tie and take a 4-1 lead.
Forrest City went down in order in the third and Smith set Sheridan down in order in the bottom of the inning.
McDaniel and Hunter McMahand hit back-to-back singles to start the Forrest City fourth and both scored as Daugherty's hit was misplayed for a two-run error, leaving Sheridan up 4-3.
Sheridan added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth
