MIGHTYMITE

Annual Forrest City race turns 20

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

The annual Mightymite Triathlon will celebrate a milestone next month.

The race, held each year in Forrest City since 1984, turns 20 this year.

That makes the race only one of a handful of triathlons that have been around 20 years.

The 2003 running of the Mightymite will take place Saturday, July 19, and will cover the same route as in years past.

Wyndell Robertson returns to head the race for the second consecutive year and expects to have a field of approximately 350 runners from several states -- about the same total as last year's race.

Last year, Kentucky's Barry Knight won the men's title while veteran runner Lesley Brainard won the female portion of the race.

Tuesday, Robertson said "a volunteer party will be held on Thursday, June 26. "Those who worked as volunteers last year are being encouraged to attend along with new volunteers for this year."

The race will cover the same three-part course, beginning

with the 0.4 mile swim across Lake Dunn at Village Creek State Park.

The second leg of the race is a 13-mile bicycle ride along Crowley's Ridge Road, ending at East Arkansas Community College. from there the participants will run the final three miles to the finish line, once again located on the football practice field by Forrest City High School.

The Mightymite is open to all runners, age 14-and -over and entrants may run individually or as three-person teams -- which each member of the team completing one leg of the race.
