The future looks bright for P-W track
By FRED CONLEY
T-H Sports Editor
The Palestine-Wheatley Patriot track team has a bright future
ahead.
In fact P-W Coach Terry Clardy went so far on Wednesday as
to predict a state title for his Patriot team -- provided his
team continues the strides and progress made this past season.
"We will be solid for a while, that's for sure,"
Clardy said. "We have good athletes in all events."
The Patriots finished runner-up in the conference this season
to perennial champ Barton and qualified eight athletes for the
Class AA State Meet held at Hot Springs -- Rashad Barnes, Fred
Leak, Elijah and Elisha Duncan, Antonio Leak, Michael Garner,
Vince Jones and Brad Zamora.
From that eight-man group, Barnes and Fred leak advanced to
compete in the Decathlon held at Cabot High School.
Both are sophomores.
Barnes finished 21st while Leak was 30th in a field of 42 competitors
from across the state.
Barnes finished with 5,450 points, missing a top 10 finish
by just 744 points.
Barnes competed in the triple jump, discus, 110-meter hurdles
and the mile run.
Leak finished with 4,726 points after competing in the same
events.
Lake Hamilton's Matt Young won the decathlon with a total score
of 7,224 points.
The P-W Junior Patriot track team ran to a third-place in the
district meet behind Clarendon and Barton.
