Meckie Johnson Borden

Mrs. Meckie Johnson Borden, age 88, Palestine, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis.

Mrs. Borden was born on June 2, 1914, in Glen, Miss, the daughter of John Mose Johnson and Mattie Smith Johnson. She lived in Palestine for most of her life, was a housewife and a was a charter member of the Midway Baptist Church.

Mrs. Borden married David Glenn Borden in 1934, and he preceded her in death in 1995. She is survived by her two sons, Donald Wayne Borden of Temple, Pa. and Jerry Layne Borden of Whitehouse, Texas; four daughters, Marie Miller of Forrest City, Joyce Jones of Hardy, Doris Waggoner of Cherokee Village and Phyllis Autry of Palestine; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation services for Mrs. Borden will be held on Friday, March 14, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bell Cemetery in Palestine.


Mary Ann "Mago" Long Nelson

Mrs. Mary Ann "Mago" Long Nelson, age 51, of Dallas, Texas, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in Dallas, Texas.

Mrs. Nelson was born Oct. 5, 1951 and grew up in Forrest City. She received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Arkansas in 1973, and was active in many charities including the March of Dimes. She was a member of the Women's Council of the Dallas Arboretum, the Women's Guild of the National Craniofacial Foundation and TACA.

In 1978, Mrs. Nelson married Barry Nelson and he survives her, along with one daughter, Mary Nelson; two sons, Fletcher Cordell and Will Nelson; her mother, Mrs. Fletcher Long Sr. of Forrest City; a brother, Fletcher Long Jr. of Forrest City; three sisters, Mardi Blissard of Little Rock, Lee Williams of Kennesaw, Ga., and Libby Hardman of North Carolina and several other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Nelson will be held on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Mark Anschutz officiating. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park under the direction of the Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home.

The family requests that memorials be made to the March of Dimes, TACA or the Dallas Arboretum.


Angela "Naynay" Pate

Ms. Angela "Naynay" Pate, age 16, of Palestine, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis.

Ms. Pate lived in Palestine for all of her life, was a 10th grade honor student at Palestine-Wheatley High School where she was also a member of the Beta Club. She was also a member of the Cross Roads Church of God in Colt.

Ms. Pate is survived by her parents, Billy W. Pate and Tina Louise Hart Pate of Palestine; a sister, Jennifer Marie Pate of the home and three grandparents, Alma Pate of Colt, Shirley Hart of Palestine and Carl Hawkins of Forrest City. She was preceded in death by her brother, Billy Pate Jr.

Visitation services for Ms. Pate will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2003, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kernodle Funeral Home in Wynne. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 14, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Palestine-Wheatley High School Gymnasium with Rev. Roger Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Bell Cemetery in Palestine.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Pate Memorial Fund, at First National Bank in Palestine.


Billy Wayne "B.J." Pate Jr.

Mr. Billy Wayne "B.J." Pate Jr., age 9, of Palestine, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at the Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis.

Mr. Pate lived in Palestine for all of his life. He was a fourth grade student at Palestine-Wheatley Elementary School and had been a past Star Student of the Week. He was also a member of the Cross Roads Church of God in Colt.

Mr. Pate is survived by her parents, Billy W. Pate and Tina Louise Hart Pate of Palestine; a sister, Jennifer Marie Pate of the home and three grandparents, Alma Pate of Colt, Shirley Hart of Palestine and Carl Hawkins of Forrest City. He was preceded in death by his sister, Angela Pate.
