Robert Barton

Mr. Robert Barton, age 84, of Palestine, died Friday, May 16, 2003, at the V.A. Medical Center in Memphis.

Mr. Barton was born June, 22, 1918, in Palestine, and was a veteran of the United States Army and a retired farmer.

Mr. Barton is survived by his wife, Magnolia Barton of Palestine; six sons, Odis L. Barton, Alvin Barton and Grover Lee Barton all of Forrest City, Robert Barton Jr. and Cledis Barton both of Palestine, and Ralph Edward Barton of Orlando, Fla.; five daughters, Shirley McKissick of Marion, Ind., Helen Cotton of Orlando, Fla., Lula M.McKissick of Forrest City, Hattie M. Phillips of Widener and Ersenia Wymes of Little Rock; a brother, Ivory Barton of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Maevella Burgess of Detroit, Mich.; 27 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Barton will be held on Friday, May 23, 2003, from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Clay Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Lane Chaple C.M.E. Church with Elder Ransom Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Casteel Cemetery.


Wayne Stanley Burkhart

Mr. Wayne Stanley Burkhart, age 82, of Forrest City, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Burkhart was born May 15, 1921, in Truman, the son of George and Kelly Watkins Burkhart. He was a machinist with Yale, a World War II veteran and a Baptist.

Mr. Burkhart is survived by his wife, Moddie Burkhart of the home; two daughters, Veda Severe of Brinkley and Jeanie Burkhart of Louisiana; eight step-sons, L.T. Gardner, J.C. Gardner, Ed Gardner, Glen Gardner, Roger Gardner and Larry Gardner all of Hughes, Bobby Gardner of Marion and Obert Smith of Michigan; two step-daughters, Pamela Harris and Lou Reinlein, both of Hughes; one brother, Thomas Burkhart of Forrest City; two sisters, Wanda Lee Cox of California and Mary Ann Goff of Texas; 27 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Burkhart will be held on Friday, May 23, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Chapel of Morgan Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home with Bro. Mark Carpenter officiating. Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the National Cemetery in North Little Rock.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.


Columbus Christopher Dukes Sr.

Mr. Columbus Christopher Dukes Sr., age 89, of Moro, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Dukes was born Sept. 15, 1913, the son of Monroe Richard Dukes and Captola Clinetime Blount Dukes. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Bethel Chapel CME Church and later the Mt. Gillian M.B. Church. He also served as a deacon, custodian for the church, president of the usher and deacon boards, and president of the usher foundation.

Mr. Dukes is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rosie Thomas Dukes of Moro; four sons, Richard Dukes of Forrest City, Lee Roy Dukes and Columbus Christopher Dukes Jr. both of Moro and Larry Dukes of Little Rock; three daughters, Oretha Ray of Palestine, Earlene Walter of Moro and Lela Coleman of Marianna; two brothers, Percy Dukes of Kansas City, Mo. and Edgar Dukes of Moro; one sister, Hattie Harrison of Batesville, Miss.; 28 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Dukes was preceded in death by three children; two sisters, Allie B. Young and Perline Brooks; and two grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Dukes will be held on Friday, May 23, 2003, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Chapel of Oliver Hightower and Son Funeral Home in Marianna. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Gillian M.B. Church in Holub's Crossing. Burial will follow in Gill Cemetery.


Leroy Neal

Mr. Leroy Neal, age 60, of Forrest City, died Sunday, May 18 at Baptist Memorial Hospital East in Memphis.

He as born Oct. 10, 1942 in Forrest City. He was a retired laborer with General Motors.

Mr. Neal is survived by six sons, Reginald Neal of Chicago, Rodney Neal of Detroit, Gregory Hendrix of Statesboro, Ga., Mario Neal of Flint Michigan, and Jerrell Neal and Khari Neal, both of Saginaw, Mich.; five daughters, Brenda King of Forrest City, Valerie Molina of Florida, Felicia Neal Burns of Garden City, Mich., Zenobia Bridgewater of St. Louis and Tricia Neal of Flint, Mich.; four brothers, James Neal Jr., Larry Graham, and Frank Neal, all of Saginaw, Mich. and Tommy Neal of Forrest City; three sisters, Olivia Bryson and Mary Neal, both of Saginaw, Mich. and Christina Neal of Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held Friday, May 23, 2003, from 12:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Clay Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 24, 2003, Salem Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Jessie McClure officiating. Burial will follow in Forrest City Cemetery, under the direction of Clay Funeral Home.


Nicholas Lee Walker

Mr. Nicholas Lee Walker, age 22, of Forrest City, died Sunday, May 18, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Walker is survived by his father, Kirk Sandifer of Arlington, Texas; his mother, Lula Kidd of Forrest City; a son, Kenney Doris of Forrest City, four brothers, Kirk Sandifer Jr. of Texas, Nathaniel Kidd Jr., Brandon Kidd and Nathan Kidd all of Forrest City; and two sisters, Stacy Sandifer of Atlanta, Ga. and Koleshia Sandifer of Arlington, Texas.

Funeral services for Mr. Walker will be held on Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Lane Chpel CME Church at 1 p.m. with Rev. Ronald Williams officiaiting. Burial will follow in Casteel Cemetery. The Clay Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements.


Gracie "Moe" Smith Woods

Mrs. Gracie "Moe" Smith Woods, age 82, of Wynne, died Wednesday, May 21, 2003, at her home.

Mrs. Woods was born Oct. 3, 1920, the daughter of J.T. and Toker Matlock Smith. She lived in Wynne for 45 years, was a homemaker and a member of the New Prospect M.B. Church near Colt.

Mrs. Woods is survived by a daughter, Janet Woods Dye of Wynne; a brother, Carl Smith of Forrest City; 11 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both her parents; her husband, Alton Woods; two daughters, Mattie Faye Woods and Doris Morgan; a son, Charles Woods; one brother, Charles Smith; and three sisters, Pearl Miller, Birtie Smith and Helen Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 23, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Thompson Wilson Funeral Home in Wynne with Bro. Eddie Addison and Bro. Tim Horton officiating. Burial will follow in Loughridge Cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be made to the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.
