Mustangs catching Red Devils at right time

By FRED CONLEY

T-H Sports Editor

The Forrest City Mustangs appear to be catching Jacksonville at just the right time.

The Mustangs picked up some steam last Friday with their 34-12 come-from-behind win over Blytheville while Jacksonville's Red Devils suffered a turnover plagued 20-9 loss to Searcy.

After winning two of their first three nonconference games, the Red Devils have been off and on in the first four conference games winning two and losing two. Jacksonville has not won back-to-back league games this season.

However, Jacksonville owns the past two conference victories over the Mustangs winning 21-0 last year and 28-0 in 2001.

Forrest City has been held scoreless for eight consecutive quarters against Jacksonville over the past two seasons.

A win over Jacksonville would leave both teams at 2-3 in the AAAAA-East.

Jonesboro and Cabot are tied for the league's top spot with both teams sporting 4-0 conference records.

Jacksonville, West Memphis and Searcy are all knotted at 2-2 in a tie for second place.

With four spots available for the Class AAAAA state playoffs, there are as many six of the eight teams that are vying for those top four places.

After Friday's road trip to Jacksonville, the Mustangs close out the season with back-to-back home games against Mountain Home and the season-ending Cotton Bale trophy game against West Memphis.

In other east games Friday, Searcy plays at Jonesboro, Cabot goes to Blytheville and West Memphis makes the long journey to Mountain Home.

Game times are 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday, the Forrest City Junior Mustangs will make their second consecutive road trip when they visit West Memphis East in a AAAAA-East Conference game.
