New FC Sr. Center to open this week

Ribbon-cutting event scheduled for Thursday

The opening of the new Forrest City Senior Citizens Center for which a ribbon cutting is scheduled Thursday, will begin a new era for seniors in Forrest City, according to Mayor Larry Bryant.

The new center is located in the Municipal Sports Complex.

"Basically, the new Senior Citizens Center will open up new horizons for our senior citizens," said Bryant. "There will be more room for more people, computers and Internet. They will have all the modern technology, a computer room, and an arts and crafts room. They'll have a big open space where they can meet and interact with each other."

The ribbon cutting activities will begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue until around 2 p.m., said Bryant. The center will be open to the public for anyone to see.

"There will also be office room," said Bryant. "In the old facility (on Grobmyer Circle) the office workers were outside in a module.

"Overall, it is a great situation, and it's going to help our seniors citizens to build a longer and better life."

He said in conjunction with the ribbon cutting, 4-H kids and young people from Forrest City Community Voices will be celebrating their own Grandparents' Day.

"Any grandparent who wants to come out is welcome," said Bryant. "We hope we can get something going throughout the community, where our senior citizens will feel that they have value added to their lives."

Access was sometimes a problem for senior citizens at the Grobmyer Circle location, Bryant said, but at the new location, "the bus can let them off right at the door. It is fully accessible. It's just going to be an asset to Forrest City."

Willie Smiley, director of the Senior Citizens Center, said everyone is excited.

"It's going to be a Godsend," said Smiley. "They are looking so forward to moving into that new center."

The center at Grobmyer Circle was accessible only by stairs, while the new center is on level ground.

"Folks are counting down the days," she said. "Some of them have been having to climb steps for years. Now they'll be able to walk on level ground. And they are looking forward to getting some exercise (walking) without having to go so much up and down. It's great."

She said they are looking forward to getting computers, and said she hopes they will be able to get someone to come teach them a computer class.

"We just can't wait, because they want to get on those computers," she said.

"We're having fun here (at Grobmyer Circle), but just wait until we get them in the new facility. They're really going to have fun then."
