Cory Embry scored three rushing touchdowns and Preston Echols caught a touchdown pass Monday as the Forrest City JV Mustangs defeated Wynne's JV 30-24 at Yellowjacket Stadium.
Embry's first touchdown came with 7:52 to play in the opening quarter. Sophomore quarterback Marcus Fair tossed the two-point pass to Echols for an 8-0 lead.
Wynne answered with 3:39 to play in the first on a long touchdown passed and then added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 8-8.
Echols caught the go-ahead scoring pass from Fair at the buzzer to put Forrest City back in front 14-8 after the conversion attempt failed.
There wasn't a Wynne defender within 20 yards of Echols.
Embry made it 22-8 with a touchdown run early in the second quarter and then added the two-point play.
Wynne crept closer late in the second using a 10-yard touchdown run to cut the Mustang lead to 22-16.
Embry answered once more just before the half on a long touchdown run and the two-point conversion made it 30-16 at the half.
The Yellowjackets scored once more late in the third to make the final.
The JV Mustangs will host Brinkley on Monday, Sept. 15.
*The Forrest City seventh and eighth-grade junior high teams will open play today at Sam Smith Stadium when they host West Memphis East.
The seventh-grade Mustangs kick off at 5 p.m. and the eighth-graders -- rained out of their opener a week ago -- will follow at approximately 6:30 p.m.
John Burgess and Lewis Etheridge will coach the seventh-grade team this season.
Burgess said he will use three different offensive units in tonight's game.
The seventh-grade program returned to first period practice sessions this year.
*The Forrest City Junior Mustangs, coming off an opening season 14-14 tie against Marianna, will host Wynne's junior high Thursday at Sam Smith. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Hughes Junior Blue Devils (1-0) will play at Rector this Thursday while the Palestine-Wheatley Junior Patriots (0-1) will play on the road at Cross County.
The annual Forrest City Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament and Barbeque will be held Monday, Sept. 29, at the Forrest City Country Club.
The golf tournament will use a four-person scramble format and participants will tee off at 1 p.m., following an 11:30 a.m. lunch at the club.
Entry fees are $50 per person with an added $15 per person fee for cart rental.
Registration deadline for the golf tournament is Thursday, Sept. 25.

The Calvary Christian School varsity Lady Eagles defeated Memphis Thrifthaven 25-20, 25-12 and 25-23 in girls' volleyball play Friday. Katie Mcnair had 16 points off serve while Melissa Smith ahad 13.
