FCity routs P-W

By FRED CONLEY

It is probably an unwritten rule but every coach knows it.

When a larger division school takes on a smaller division school in any sport, the larger school is usually favored to win.

In most cases, that is true. In some, it isn't.

Friday, it was very true for the Forrest City Lady Mustang softball team, playing at the Class AAAAA level, hosting Class AA Palestine-Wheatley at the Sports Complex.

In what was supposed to be a varsity nonconference doubleheader, the Lady Mustangs ended the first game is three innings, winning 19-0.

P-W Coach Lanny Allen opted not to play the second game, thus resulting in a forfeit win for the Lady Mustangs.

When P-W catcher Cara Lansford was injured in the bottom of the first inning and had to be taken off the field, Allen was left very short-handed, prompting the decision to scratch the scheduled second game.

As of early Monday, there was no immediate word on Lansford's condition, after taking a foul pitch off the inside portion of her knee.

"She is on crutches and it looks as if she may be out for a while," Allen said.

The injury to Lansford forced Allen to move outfielder Natalie Halbert to catcher along with shifting other players around.

Forrest City starting pitcher Mallory Nelson did not surrender a hit against the Lady Patriots and walked only one in the top of the third. A throwing error by Forrest City in the top of the first gave P-W its other base runner. Nelson went all three innings to collect the win.

The two victories help the Lady Mustangs improve to 4-6 on the year. Forrest City will travel to West Memphis today as the team returns to conference action. P-W falls to 1-2 on the year.

The Lady Mustangs will hold "Senior Night" on Thursday, when they host Blytheville.
