Mr. Thomas Lamar Atwood, age 88, of Forrest City, died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at his home.
Mr. Atwood was born Jan. 12, 1916, in Wesson, the son of Thomas Judson Atwood and Versa Blanche Stringfellow Atwood. He lived in Forrest City for the past 25 years, was a mechanical engineer, was chief engineer for the Union Carbide and Southworth Corp., an instructor with Crowley's Ridge Technical Institute in Forrest City and was a graduate of the University of Arkansas. He was also a fighter pilot during World War II and after retiring he became a fighter pilot instructor. He served in the Vestry for Holy Cross Episcopal Church in West Memphis for several years and was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
Mr. Atwood married Betty Strahan in 1954, and she survives him along with a daughter, Susan Shaw of Forrest City; two sons, Dr. Thomas L. Atwood of Austin, Texas and John F. Atwood of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Ralph W. Atwood of Salem, Ore.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation for Mr. Atwood will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevens Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, at 2 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Pine Bluff.
